Need help with supplement dosages

I spoke to a PPD hotline and they recommended a B complex twice a day, calcium supplement to equal 1400 mg of calcium intake per day after I've eaten and an Omega 3 supplement.

I'm taking 600 calcium since I figure I get about 700 mg per day through food. I take a 50 mg B complex at breakfast and dinner. I'm stuck on the Omega 3 supplement. How much DHA and EPA should I look for for maximum affect?

Thanks for your input wise women.

Start with 1000 mg of fish oil in the morning and 1000 at night. See how that goes. I take Carlson's fish oil which is one of the best.

From Natural Health After Birth by Romm

Herbs that I'll list last and very importantly and improving overall caloric intake through a well balanced diet: increasing protein intake (also, helps replenish lost blood from birth), ensuring proper vitamin and mineral intake through foods and keep taking you prenatals. The addition of fatty acids, as above poster said w/fish oils [coming from either plant based source, or purified fish source (ie:anchovies, sardines, etc...lesser fish)] evening primrose can aslo be helpful (2,500mg daily) and a B complex.
Inadequate fluids intake can aggravate depression, you need at least 2L of H2o daily. Avoid caffeine, chocolate, coffee and soda...I think this is because cafine is a diuretic=dehydration...so if NEED that coffee make sure your flooding yourself w/fluids!! It also says, keep sugars to a minimum. ALL THINGS I'M DRAWN TO WHEN DEPRESSED!! AACCKK!!

My Midwife prescribes VITEX to people to regulate PMS symptoms and this book also advises it for PPD, I have seen it in vitamin form by Rainbow Light co.

A recipe from the above mentioned book is:

1/2oz. motherwort tincture
1/2oz vitex (also know as Chaste berry) tincture
1/4 oz lavender tinctuer
1/4oz lemon balm tincture
1/4oz passionflower tincture
1/4oz scullcap tincture I HAVE SEEN IN A NATURAL HERBAL MAY BE COUNTER INDICATED FOR BREASTFEEDING, can insert St. Johns Wort (I think check 4 sure!!)

Combine all of these ingredients into one blend
Dose: Take 1/2 to 1 tsp as needed up to 4 tsp daily for two weeks.

At the birth center we just had a Mom with a sever anxiety and PPD, (I'm a birth assistant, for disclosure) her problem was lack of sleep. When she went to sleep she had serious anxiety. The midwife loaded her up on the supplements, little variation of above mentioned, and also valarian. If sleep is a problem this can be helpful, though sometimes sleep is not problem for those depressed!

HTH, good luck Momma, things start leveling off at two weeks PP, then get better every day!

Highly recomend at least 2 grams of EPA in fish oil. I take the Omega 3 mood, 5 gelcaps a day. 4 gelcaps would be 2 grams of EPA. It is one of the most important things for depression. The other thing I recomend is that you take 600 mg of Magnesium Glycinate. There is a difference and I noticed it when I switched from the famous Natural Calm to Mag. Glycinate.

There are links for these products, if you click on the link in my siggy, it tells in that post what I take.

Just to let you know you can take Flax Seed Oil instead of Fish Oil. Thats what I did when I had PPD. It worked wonders. That with healthy eating, excercise and being outside really helped me get past PPD.

My Omega 3 supplement just arrived in the mail. 2 capsules is 1 mg. I took 2 with breakfast. Should I take all 4 together or divide them up between breakfast and lunch? I have a handful of walnuts every day which contain Omega 3s too.

I'll continue taking the B-complex at breakfast and lunch.

I will look for magnesium glyconate next time I'm at the drugstore. Will a Cal-Mag vitamin do the trick if that is all I can find? Right now I'm just taking calcium and trying to increase my calcium intake through food.

What about Vitamin D? I live in a Mediterranean and get a good dose of sunshine on a daily basis. I've been trying to take a 30 minute per day as anti-depressant.

How long should it take until I feel a difference?

(Those SuperMom vitamins look awesome!)

Vitamin D might help, even if you are out in the sun. 2,000 IU a day is safe for anyone over 1 year of age, even if you are out in the sun. My Medical Doctor told me about this, she said they are coming out with studies that vitamin D helps depression.

I doubt you will be able to find magnesium glycinate in the drugstore, dont know, but if you order it from iherb.com, it doesnt usually cost much for shipping, sometimes just a dollar or so...

With the vitmain D and magnesium, probably notice a difference within a few weeks. My goal is 6 a day of the mag. Calcium can cause depressive feelings, I think.

Interesting about the calcium causing depressive feelings. The PPD hotline that I spoke to told me to take it! I'm going to have to settle for regular magnesium. I'm not in the US so I won't be able to buy it online but maybe I'll find it in a health food store.
