Shock- Good ER experience!

My almost 5 yo dd was running up the stairs yesterday, when she tripped and hit her head on the baseboard, which had a sharp corner. She has a 1 1/2 inch long gash on her right temple near her eye, and it bled profusely.
I cleaned it up and bandaged it, and decided to wait until hubby came home before deciding whether it needed stitches. Other than the pain and being afraid of the sight of her own blood, she was fine, and played normally for the rest of the day.
We don't use normally allopathic medicine and don't even have a Primary care Doc, other than our chiropractor, and we don't vaccinate. Those things made me very nervous about entering into "enemy territory", and possibly facing a hostile interrogation. But it had to be done, so we braced ourselves and headed out.
Fortunately, the waiting room was mostly empty, and we only waited about 5 minutes before being seen. When asked who our Primary care doc was, I said we don't use allopathic medicine except when necessary (like now!) and that we normally just use a chiropractor, and that since she hasn't been sick, we haven't been to one for almost three years.
Response? "Ok, good, and..." Wow!
Then when asked if she was up to date on her immunizations, I responded that we don't for religious reasons.
Response? Again, "Ok, good, and...." They didn't even bat an eyelash!
I was asked both questions a couple more times by different nurses and secretaries that were filling out paperwork, and the response was the same every time! I couldn't believe they were being so cool!
The cherry on top was when I was paying the copay at the end, I mentioned that I was glad it was not my son with autism that needed stitches, because he would have been more difficult to control during the delicate stitching up process. Guess what she said "Oh? Have you read that book by Jenny McCarthy? She is a really great writer. I just loved her book" Not many in mainstream medical are willing to give her any credit at all, so this was pretty great.
I was so relieved at how well it all went, that when we got in the car to leave, I just sat there and cried for a minute. I have been dreading this situation for so long, and it ended up being a complete non-issue. I wish all ER's were this cool.

It is scary to face mainstream medical people when you've been doing your own healthy thing for a while.

My kids are up to date on vaccines per my doctor's recommendations...

It just so happens that my doctor, and other doctors that I respect (Dr. Mendelsohn, Dr. Tenpenny), insists that I do research and make up my own mind about it...

We're up to date!

Glad you didn't get any kind of flak. I understand the tears of relief.

I Hope I am as lucky whenever I face the same situation!

So glad it went well. I totally understand your tears - our kids' health is so important and to fear a backlash because of educated choices we make, well it's powerful and emotional.
