Going no-shampoo!! - Page 6

It is great to see so many peoples joining us! Welcome!!

I am surprised that I haven't had the itchies at all. I used to go many days wtihout washing, but finally had to because of the tiches. This time around I find that the rinses and the BS keep my scalp happy and not itchy.
My hair feels heavy with natural oils, and I really like that feeling. There is a definate difference to the natural oils, and a greasy head.

It is a good thread isnt it? I've just come back from enrolling in a university course (Primary Education - grade school teacher to you guys). One of my first year subjects is Ecology and the Environment and is 50% assessible by an assignment on Ecology and Popular Culture. I'm thinking I'm going to write an essay on how much advertising brainwashing there is enticing us to buy uncessary products such as shampoo, household cleaners and disposable nappies, because we're obsessed with so called "cleanliness). Like, how society as a whole doesnt give a fig about health or the environment if its generally accepted that something's necessary.

Ohhh...this is soo exciting to see so many new people joining us ! Lovinglife.......well, maybe NOW, if Mothering sees how many responses this thread has gotten, they might take another look at look at your idea. I think its fabulous! I just don't feel I have the knowledge to write such an article. Same goes for EC.....my 13 month old is on the cusp of graduating. We LOVE it! I know Ingrid Bauer is doing an Oregon/Washington tour right now......hoping to get to see her. She'll be doing other parts of the country later this spring/summer.

Okay...a bit off-topic....

So nice to see all you guys here.....it really makes me feel not so "abnormal". LOL DH has been pretty good about my "new thing".......neither one of my little guys (3 and 1) have had poo for about 2 1/2 weeks. Gotta convince MIL......she's a chemical-cleaner addict.....with a case of chemical-induced lupus.

I just wanted to post for probably my last time until after our move and are settled in Germany (well after 2/10).

I'm actually going to only use BS and rinse with a water and Tea Tree Oil (and maybe Lavender oil?? Maybe it'll make it smell nice???) spray.

I'm a little nervous, but excited too.

Wish me luck!!! I'll post with how my hair's doing after I'm back online

I love this!! When I told dh though he just rolled his eyes...I really think he thinks I am nuts! LOL Not sure what day I am on, maybe 7 or 8. I washed with bs/acv 2 days ago, and just wet today...feeling greasy, but in a good way I think. I asked my sis(who is very conscious of my crunchiness) if I was greasy, and she said no, but your hair looks shiny...maybe it *is* working. :LOL

I wanted to second Oceansummer's question:

I have a question about the BS & ACV. Do you rinse out the BS WITH the ACV or do you rinse out the BS first with water then use the ACV and then rinse that out with water (or do you leave that in?)

I'm trying this too. I had gone 4 days but then went for a haircut (1st one in a year) so she shampooed me. I'm going to shampoo again today to get out the spray she put in my hair and then strt fesh again. I felt a little greasy last week, but I always put my hair up in a pony tail anyway. Now I need to go buy a good brush too.

I need a good brush too.
Can anyone recommend one?

:)

I love threads where we're all doing something together and can check on eachother's progress.

So here's my next adventure, not sure when I am going to start.
I am going on a TV ban in my household. We are going to see how long we can go without watching it. I think we might start on thurs or fri. Now don't get me wrong, DH will be on his own. The superbowl is this weekend and I can't ask him to miss it! Maybe we can start on monday morning...hee hee

So, if anyone has any thoughts on this, let me know. Maybe I'll start a TV boycott thread or something.

Movers aren't here yet, so I'll post again

The type of brush I read was good, and can vouch for (it's EXCELLENT) is any old, stiff 100% boar bristle brush. WalMart has some if your hair is fine, thin. Mine is thicker, so I needed a stiffer bristled brush, which I found several of at Sally's.

For BS and vinegar rinses, here's what I've been doing:

Wet hair, pour the BS/water mixture over & rub in, rinse out completely.

Pour water/vinegar rinse over, rub in gently, rinse out.

~OR~

Don't do the rinse in the shower and spray towel-dried hair w/water/vinegar (or whatever else you're using). Leave in.

These methods are working fabulously for me

Day 11 here.

Maybe this is what I'm feeling. It's not greasy, just weird.

What does a TTO rinse do? I need something for the ends as they are a little dry. But I checked them out and they seem to be pretty healthy. Maybe a little olive oil after the shower. I've used it in the past and know how careful you have to be to not use too much of that stuff!

I just *realized* that my hair stylist is also a friend so I bet I could get away with her just cutting my hair and not washing.

Don't know about the TV ban. Our problem is we have these shows we watch that used to be decent and are going downhill quickly. It's like we keep watching hoping they'll get better! DS is only 2.5 months old though. Not like we have to watch out for toddlers watching too much TV.

I hear ya. DD is now 7 mos so we actually do have start being more careful. She now turns her head to find wherever the sound and lights are coming from. She is watching. It's kind of scary. No more Sopranos when the kid is awake! :LOL

For DH and I, we really have started to cut down. In doing this we have found that we spend more quality time together in the evenings. We read a book together, listen to NPR, or just talk over popcorn. We have started putting on a CD and just spending time together...like I'll be painting and he's reading a magazine but we aren't focus on the blaring box. It's so pleasant. I think this revelation will cause me to eventually phase out evening TV time unless it's something special.

From what I understand, TTO is more of an antiseptic, so it'll help your scalp more than anything.

I washed with BS mixed with TTO last night and my scalp feels terrific! I have a very sensitive scalp that tends to break out all the time. It's never felt better...honestly. And my hair is so thick and clean looking--I still can't believe it

Today I just rinsed, no BS. Then did a diluted ACV with a few drops of TTO rinse. Man, my hair feels so much better! Still slightly dry on the ends but that will easily be remedied. I'm so, so happy I didn't give in and suds up yesterday!

Moral of the story...stick with it!!

And, I put the ACV in the microwave to heat it up. I was tired of having a rude awakening when the cold liguid hit my butt:LOL

I've been meaning to post for about a week now. I tried to give up shampoo about 4 or 5 years ago but ended up giving up after a month and a half and started to use a shampoo by Avalon. I just couldn't seem to get over the greasey feeling. I'm still convinced that it's a trap though that began when I was a baby with mom shampooing my hair with baby shampoo. I knew someone in college who had never once in her life had her hair shampooed and it was beautiful. I had to ponder the thought for quite a few years before deciding I would try it though. Even though I failed, I decided I wasn't going to start the cycle with DS. He has never been shampooed. I just rinse his hair with water now. I would put strong rosemary tea on his scalp when he was tiny. The few times he has had something really sticky stuck in his hair, I've just wiped it out with a wash cloth that had some 1:10 baby bonners: water on it. Except for once when I used a scrub of corn meal, cross cut oatmeal, and sea salt, which will get anything off, including the tar-type of oil from an oil spill :.

Anyway, you all have inspired me to try to break the cycle again. I'm on day 4 now, and I'm not looking like you could change the oil of a car with what's in my hair. I hope this thread can stay alive for a couple of months so that you all can encourage me so I won't give up this time.

Edited to get rid of an unexpected smilie.

count me in too!

I have been following this thread for a while now and decided to go with it. I am kind of a shampoo-a-holic. I shampoo almost every day or my hair is just not right. I have very fine thin hair that used to be curly (before kids) and since it has gone straight I just don't know how to handle it, so I shampoo and condition every day. I am sure this is why I have so many bad hair days! Anyway, this is day two for me, I had a great hair day yesterday after only doing a water rinse so I am optimistic! I have tons of bs and acv in the house because now that I think of it, shampoo is most likely the most toxic thing in the house. We don't use cleaners or cosmetics (except for my occasional mascara). So it makes perfect sense to go shampoo free too. I only shampoo my girls once a week and they have beautiful hair. Anyway, nice to join you all!

I've been a closet no 'poo gal off and on for quite a while. One day as I was heading for one of my book clubs I wondered what they'd say if I told them I haven't used a shampoo or a hair brush for months!

I do condition, and I comb with my fingers. I believe in good brushes, but don't need one -- even with long curly hair my fingers do the trick.

For whoever asked, the reason natural boar bristle brushes work so well is that they absorb a little of your scalp's natural oils and help distribute it down the hair shaft, helping to make your hair conditioned and shiny.

I don't do egg washes because of our friends Sam and Ella (salmonella). Just kinda grosses me out to put raw eggs on my head or leave them behind in the shower for my family.

When I need a little hold I like to use food-grade aloe vera gel, applied when my hair is wet.

I also haven't used a blow-dryer for almost 5 years.

I don't have even one split end, and I know it's because I treat my hair with respect.

Wow! Lots of great responses!

I have used a tiny bit of poo on DS in the past. but I haven't in a month of so, and will not in the future. Sometimes I feel bad that I have subjected him to that little bit He is only 5 months old, so I am hoping that by not using it, he won't get caught up in the need for products.

Tv ban... I never had a TV growing up until I was 14. I don't watch movies now, but do watch a lot of decorating shows. I want to go no TV when we move (in 2 weeks) but DH is only willing to go for 2 weeks without it right now. At least when we do get it back we are only going to have 4 channels. The 4 he needs.

Back to the no products, do you all use things such as deoderants, lotions and potions etc?
