New shrubs...don't know what they are. :(

Hiya.

We had 4 shrubs planted in front of the new house and I'm wondering what they are. I'm also wondering how hard it's going to be to replant a few of them.

I have 3 of these:

...and 2 of these:

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I'm really not sure, I bet both are evergreen, but it's hard to tell...do they have any flower buds?

The first might be an evergreen azalea. The second picture looks like a rhododendron, but I'm not sure.....

....but it's WAY too close to the foundation! I would move it now, while you can -- it's probably going to get a LOT bigger, and if you don't give it lots of space, you're going to have to do hard pruning in the years to come, and the plant will suffer and not look very good.

Asking around Garden Web, they say the first one is probably a Carissa Holly and the second is a photinia, maybe?

I haven't noticed any flower buds. They were planted either yesterday or this morning.

I'm definitely moving the hollies out of that space, how far away from the foundation should they be?

Thanks Quirky!

Saw your post on the main board.
The first is hard to tell and I'm not familiar w/carissa holly so can't say for sure, but I'd bet on photinia for the 2nd one. Those red tinged leaves are the giveaway. The Rhodies I grew up with didn't have that red tinge to them.
Is there a good nursery nearby? I'd take clippings in if you really need to know for sure.
I grew up in OR and our photinias got huge (as well as our rhodies)!! 6' or more high if you let them and maybe 3'-4' deep/wide. Just depends on how you trim over the years, and how you want to use them. Many people used them as natural fences.

Good luck!

Your local extension agency should have a master gardener to help you.

The first one looks like a creeping wintergreen to me. It may stay small and "rock garden" looking.

The second one looks like red-tip to me. We had it a lot in the South. I don't care for it... tends to get very large... but the new growth is reddish like that and the leaves shiny.

Take some sample to the MG or extension office to be sure.

Your 2nd one looks like Cleyera japonica to me - popular landscaping shrub, evergreen, fast-growing.

And, yeah, WAY too close to the foundation for shrubs...
