changing diapers

Do you change your babies (newborns) diaper every time they poo. Liam poos all the time I just change him right before he feeds. I was just wondering what other mama's do. I don't want to wake him up just to change him or he would never sleep.

With DS, poo diapers were always changed promptly. I would much rather deal with changing diapers in the middle of the night rather than the diaper rash that ensues. Pee diapers I'm not as vigilant about but if I'm using cloth they have to be changed frequently anyway, if they're sposies and its just pee its not as big of an issue since the polymer absorbs moisture away from the skin. Usually around the 6 week mark the poos become less frequent.

During the day, yes, if baby is not sleeping. At night, no. In fact, we have temporarily switched back to disposibles for the time being because baby needs changing so often.

Slightly off topic, am I the only one with a newborn who hates, and I mean really really hates, being changed?

With my twins we always changed poops right away. They do poop often in the beginning. For us it was usually right after a feeding. My sister has a 3 wk old and he poops ALL the time. His poor little bum is raw from pooping so much.

Yup, I change them constantly. When DS1 was little and I just didn't want to, the thought that kept me going was that, someday if it ever came to that, I'd want to be as well taken care of. But guilt is an excellent motivator for me, apparently!

If you don't use cloth wipes and wipe solution, I love the Lansinoh wipes in the beginning. They contain Lanolin and they're super gentle and soothing when they poop all the time.

I do the same thing this time around. With DD1 I changed the second she did anything which disturbed her sleep constantly. If DD2 is sleeping and she happens to squirm and I hear the shuttle launch in her pants , unless it sounds HUGE, I just wait until she wakes up. Once she starts being more awake through the day I won't let them sit though.

I change after poop or pee, day or night. I also try catching when it seems appropriate. This little guy goes back to sleep pretty easy nursing after diaper changes though.

I always changed as soon as I knew he was poopy, day or night. 2 reasons, he has sensitive skin adn got a red bottom very easily (still does), and I thought about how long I would like to sit in a poopy diaper. Not long at all. Yes, he HATED being changed. He would cry like I was cutting an arm off, claw at his own face and turn red. But some things are non-negotiable.

I feel guilty this time around because I change less frequently than DS1. With him I did cloth from the beginning so I was changing hourly. This time I have given myself some slack and am still using disposables. I change after poops, and when the diaper is looking puffy from tinkle. But at night I have been letting him sleep through because even when he does seem to sound like he poops, its really only a tiny amount! He does his big poo's during the day.

so I am the bad mom. I change before feedings, so, every 2ish hours. DS is constantly farting and pooping. If it is an especially juicy one, I will wait till it seems over and change.

we're in cloth, which btw I love! We used sposies for a week till the cord came off and I love cloth. I don't know how people prefer sposies, the must be constantly buying diapers!

OK I feel a little better at least I am not completely alone, even if there is only one of you. I don't know if it is because he was premature but he doesn't have giant up the back poos. They are always small and contained and truthfully it is hard to tell when he has one because he grunts all the time so I have resorted to just before feeding putting a new one on but there is always poo in it.

We are using half cloth. He has a small rash and I can't decide which is better to use while the redness heals so I have been switching it up a lot. Once the rash is gone I would like to try doing cloth full time so I can tell what is causing rashes.

Liam screams at every change he hates it. I am a little sad because I remember this being a quiet alert time with my others. May be he will grow into it when he gets a little more eye focus. :

My newborn HATES to be changed. It is really the only time she cries and let me tell you she wants the WORLD to know she hates it!
We use sposies here and i change her every time i even think she has a poo except at night, I only change her twice. Just in case she has poo in there for awhile, i pile on the diaper cream to act as a barrier. That seems to prevent the rashes so far. :

See, I think Emma is opposite of most of ya'll's babies-- she'll happily sit in poo all day long and the only way I know is if I happen to be changing her anyway, or if I hear it happen (which is often). But if she pees at all, she HOLLERS. She will NOT sit in a wet diaper. Although, we are using cloth prefolds, so it's really sitting right up on her skin every time she pees.

So usually I change her when she fusses, when I happen to think "hmm it's been an hour or so" and check, or if I hear the poo happening (which, again, is often-- she EXPLODES, rotfl). At night, I do change before feeding, so that we can nurse right down to sleep.

ETA: About diaper rash, we had some with the sposies, which was the first week and a half or so. But since I've gone to the cloth and been changing more often, and using a dab of Desitin most of the time, it cleared up fine.

I generally change before feeding, sometimes i'll wait and change between sides, calm the beast ya know and most of my kids seemed to poo about 5 minutes into feeding. still working on learning Avalons patterns. I TRY to not leave baby sitting in poo if i know it is there..like i hear/feel an explosion but we're still in the frequent but ultimately tiny poos phase and using sposies till i'm healed enough for doing laundry.

My kids alll hate being changed, no doubt why i'm laid back about changes. i rarely have any rashy issues until they start solid food, I imagine i'd change more often if baby tended to be rashy.
