I saw some gauze wraps by gypsy mama and want to make one. Is gauze what I think it is...gauze bandage like? The insructions i have sais to cut lenthwise-b/c bolts of fabric are wide-can gauze handle that or could it rip and fray without a hem?

I made a gauze wrap last summer. The fabric was a cotton gauze, not necessarily as light as the bandage stuff. I got a length of gauze and actually didn't cut it at all. I folded it in half so that it was half it's width doubled over itself. I then ran it through my machine, sealing the open edge together. I left a part undone, turned it rightside out, and stitched the opening closed. I like that better, becuase the gauze was so lightweight, it isn't as comfortable so thin. It added strength and comfort being two layers thick and also solved the problem of the fabric being too wide. Only thing I wish I had done was get another yard, because I dried it w/o thinking and it shrunk.

ask for crinkle cotton or cotton gauze at the fabric store, they'll be able to point you in the right direction. it is *not* the bandage stuff.

it will not fray when you cut it down the middle length-wise, though it does have an unfinished look to it so you can hem it if you like. but it's not necessary.

I just made mine and did hem the edges, but left it almost at full width. I feel like the width helps with such a light fabric to make it more comfortable.
