Help introducing more solids and neocate ?s...

DS is 10 months still BF but has one meal a day and sometimes fruits in the morning. Blueberries may have been a problem, allergist said no but we trialed two times and both times he got a excema looking rash near elbow. Allergist said not related but we dc'd regradless.

So he has successfully had (all organic) beef, lamb, chicken, turkey, broccoli, peach, pear, banana, avocado, yam/sweet potatoe, white potato, carrot & squash.

This week we add asparagus. I would love to add an oatmeal/grain type of thing, we eat steel cut and Im not familiar with arrowroot and sago but saw it on the lists. I also saw quinoa. Is one of these safe to add? Or is it better to keep going with fruits/veg?

Any suggestions? He has intolerances to soy/dairy and like I said above possibly blueberries unless something else is causing the patchy excema thing near his elbows.

Also, when can I stop "trialing"-do you just keep adding one food per week until he is like 2 or 3?

The allergen gave us neocate to try when I stop nursing as an alternative to whole milk when he turns one. I would liek to stop BFing when he is about one, depending on how he feels about that (son not allergist). Any thoughts on neocate?

Really, its better to continue without grains. And with an allergy prone child, you never stop trialing I don't think. I don't have any advice about formula. As for what to add- just start throwing in what you want in your diets and see how it goes, though I would avoid grains and sweets if you can.

Unfortunately, I agree. You sort of never stop trialing. Though by 2 or 3, you should have introduced most foods, right?

My ds (1 yr old) eats rice and gluten-free oats occasionally. He's also had some millet and sorghum in some gf baked goods I made. Mostly, we do fruits, vegetables and meats. He loves avocado. We add oil to everything for the fat he's not getting through dairy products. He's still nursing, but only at night, not by my choice. He's just too busy and active to want to nurse during the day.

What's in Neocate? If there are any soy or dairy ingredients (no matter how "broken-down") or corn, I would not give it. I bought a can of rice formula that I've given a couple of times (when we've left ds with our babysitter). I added oil to it also.

Milk isn't necessary, even after weaning (though I would gently encourage to nurse beyond a year, especially with an allergy prone baby). You can get the added fat, protein and calcium from other food sources. It takes a little more effort to make sure you cover your bases nutritionally, but that's a good thing in the long run.

Where do you get rice formula? My ds is 6.5 mo & drinks Elecare which is like Neocate. It has no milk or soy but loaded with corn syrup. We are desperate to get him off it but he's reacted to everything. I've never tried a rice formula. Do you think it'd be appropriate for a 6.5mo? Thanks!

Unfortunately, it's not okay for a baby younger than a year. And it's not really that great, other than it has vitamins and such. This is the link, fyi. It doesn't have all the fat or protein a growing baby and toddler needs. I'm sorry your baby is reacting to so many things Are you working on gut healing for him? Have you tried giving him probiotics?

Thanks for the link. I'll keep it for later when he's older.

The whole idea of gut healing is new to me so I don't know a whole lot of things to do but I did make some bone broth from organic chickens but he refused that. He's very picky & refuses anything different. I have tried two different probiotics and he has gotten a rash from both.

I have ordered some digestive enzymes from Houston Enzymes. Hoping somehow that will help him!

Oh, and I am attempting relactation but I'm not getting very much milk at all right now--2ml a day or so.

Otherwise, he just takes Elecare & every couple of weeks, we trial a food. So far, no winners

Thanks, I just saw quinoa on some of the lists I use and wondered if I should add it in, I'm fine with fruits/veg and meats and so is he. What is the reason to avoid quinoa, arrowroot ec?

I figured I'd be trailing for a long time. I get so excited to start a new fruit/veg!

For his first bday I wanted him to be able to have cake with frosting. What do others do? I bought an organic cake mix (vanilla) maybe I should post about that.

Where do I find what foods to give him if he's not getting whole milk? The allergist said to use neocate in place of the whole milk but if i knew what foods to give I'd happily leave out the neocate.

My DD2 went to rice milk at 13 months when she weaned. We just make sure she's got a well rounded diet. We do salmon every four days, lots of different veggies and fruits. Both my kids reacted to quinoa. There's also tapioca starch as an alternative to arrowroot. Oatmeal, being cross contaminated with gluten so much should be avoided until later. Everything the kids eat is a "trial"

Ok, is there any resource anyone knows about online to get sort of some kind of plan. DS will not have whole milk, we eat a pretty well rounded diet despite not having dairy or soy but I want to make sure I am giving DS foods he needs when he weans. I didn't think I could trial in salmon for some time. How old?

IMO it's hard to give a toddler a well rounded diet w/out bm or formula till 2. I know my odd is 2.5 and like today she ate great for 2 meals, but other days she'll go on bites of food. Her and Evan were both on Neocate till 2 b/c of multiples food intolerances. I wouldn't worry as much w/ just dairy/soy, but part of that will be the child's weight etc. AJ went to rice milk at 13 mos and he was fine, but I would give him formula now if I had to do it again. He was almost 25# at 1, Evan was 24.5# at 2, so he really needed the extra fat etc, along w/ he couldn't have anything but formula and rice till 15 mos.

Neocate can be a hard transition though, especially for a bf baby. It might come down to not doing it if he's not losing weight etc and he won't take it. I've known bf babies who have had to get tube fed b/c they had to have the formula and weren't taking it. You might call Neocate and ask for the toddler sample pack and try what they send and see if he likes any of it.

My kids were both having fish (tilapia and salmon) at 1 year old. My kids have intolerances, not allergies though. Fish don't seem to be as high on the intolerance list as the allergy list.

Water (or raw goat milk) kefir.
Bone broth.
Green juice.
Sauerkraut juice.

Mineral water.
Baby Calm.
Grass-fed liver.
Local, pastured egg yolk.
Celtic sea salt.

CLO-fermented.
Coconut oil.

With infant allergies, I'd recommend waiting until closer to 1 yr before introducing solids; and no jar foods as they are nutrient neutral, at best and are basically empty filler calories.

NO GRAINS.

Your mama's milk is exactly what your baby was meant to have.

He has already started solids, he gets fruit in the morning and something in the evening. We started very slow, with very little and now he eats about a of fruit per day and another with a meat and veggie. Still bfing but we'd like to conceive again so I'm hoping to stop when he turns one. He gets organic and nothing froma jar/package. We decided not to go with the neocate, we just couldn't reason giving him those ingredients when we've worked so hard to BF and feed him organic food that I steam/puree etc. We are trying very hard to learn about these other foods to get him the nutrients he needs. I just don't know how much more I can do at home, I am not a SAHM. I tried hard to figure out the whole kefir thing but couldn't find all the "materials" i needed, the grains and gave up.

WuWei, Each thing you listed, he must consume each day? Also, what is baby calm?

Kathy, Where do I get an "intolerance list?"

Anyone: When do you rotate in grains? When do you rotate in sugar (ever)?

If you have excel, PM me your email and I'll send it to you as an attachment. Or post #95 http://www.mothering.com/discussions...e=5&highlight=

When DD2 was 13 months old, I did an elimination with her. I'll try to remember her foods:

chicken
turkey
tilapia
salmon
pork

sweet potato
carrot
spinach
celery
romaine lettuce
fennel
leek

banana

olive oil
oregano
garlic
ginger
coconut
vanilla
cane sugar
maple syrup

rice

I think that's it. She had that from around 14 or 15 months until she was 3 years 3 months when she got the ALCAT testing and got some foods back (and others taken away). When I brought her to the pediatric GI, she said that it was a very balanced diet and it was fine. Not many foods, but healthy.

We used neocate for several years after ds weaned at 20 months. However, I wish I would have known more about the benefits of extended bf'ing back then cause I would have continued much longer then the 20 months. DS is 8 now and has not outgrown even one allergy and his asthma is pretty bad, only controlled by daily steroids. I feel that had I nursed him longer we might not be in this position. I don't think there's anything wrong with neocate, but honestly, it's not breastmilk and with an allergy prone lo, there's nothing better! JMHO
