Temperament/Activity Level

Sooo, after months of debating and going back and forth, I'm quietly considering getting a dog. Over a year old though, no pup!

The breed I'm looking at specifically is a Wheaten Terrier - or even a Schweatzen (apparently that's mixed with a schnauzer?) due to the fur and relative size.

I'm reading mixed reviews though on a) it's suitability as a family pet b) it's overall temperament and c) it's activity level

Anyone familiar? Have one? Know someone who does? I realize most info is anecdotal, but I know no one here will sugar coat anything.

TIA!

I have lots of firsthand experience with Wheatens and Schnauzers, and I HIGHLY recommend both of them.

Wheaties are a little bit less needy than Schnauzers, who want to be with you every second of the day. Neither breed is overly active.

They also have a different type of coat that is a lot harder to care for than Schauzers. If they are mixed, I don't know what kind of coat you could expect.

Wheatens are the BEST family dogs. Great with kids great size, easy to train, and just wonderful. Both breeds are softer in temperament than the average terrier. Neither of them are terriers in the true sense, anyway, and Wheatens actually did a lot of herding as part of their original purpose.

They are expensive to buy and to keep, but they are worth it. Make SURE you go through a good breeder, someone who is part of the National Club at the very least, and hopefully who belongs to a couple of local clubs, too. Also, make sure they do health testing for hips, eyes, autoimmune diseases like Addison's and thyroid testing.

You will need to comb (not brush, brushing is useless) your dog every week to get down to the skin. Brushing is only useful for the topcoat and does not really do anything. Wheatens have a ton of HAIR, and they need to be line brushed down to the skin every week. (WHen I say "brush" I mean combed, too.)

They are GREAT with kids, GREAT with people, and awesome to train.

ALl of the above goes for Schnauzers, too, but the grooming is waaaay easier. You can learn to clip them yourself, or you can take them to a groomer. For show, we strip schnauzers to the skin every few months, and it is a painful and long 5 stage process that takes over a month. But for a pet, you could use a 10 blade and scissors.

When we show Wheatens, we hand scissor everything with THINNING shears. This way there are no scissor marks. For a pet, you can just have a groomer do the dog every 4 weeks and they will use regular shears.

Anything else you want to know, just ask. I know a good breeder in the Midwest (Wisconsin) if you are interested.

I know a few families with each. All are very happy with their dogs. Wheatens that I know have been friendly, good with kids, and had a reasonable energy level. Same for Schnauzers, the schnauzers seem a little more standoffish/stoic, but that might just be the individuals I know.

Personally, if you're paying money for a dog and not going through rescue, I'd go for a purebred rather than a mix Definitely look into the things mom0810 mentioned when looking for breeders as well. The SCWT Club of America has an awesome web site - that would probably be a good place to start if you choose a Wheaten.

There was someone on here who just got a Wheaten a few weeks ago, that thread would probably have some good information in it too - good luck!

Thank you so much! That is some fantastic information! Now I'll have to really look into this carefully. I'm in northern Ontario, so hopefully I can find a reputable breeder somewhere within the province...

Check the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of Canada, or the Ontario Club's website. There are usually breeder referrals there.

The person that I know is in Northern WI... not that far, really. Most great breeders will ship, too. But we've made the drive to Ontario for dog shows and breedings, and it wasn't that bad. Well worth it for a baby puppy! :

I realize this is sooooo OT - but I'm feeling guilty for looking at getting a purebred. I think I've had 'shelter dog' mentality beat into me... and I swear I've looked! We just really haven't seen anything suitable for us.

What's your opinion on rescue dogs?? I'm off to look at the Ontario website.

I love rescue dogs - especially for families! The great thing is that you can go through a breed rescue, so if you've decided that a Wheaten works best for you, you can still get that breed or there are the all breed rescues too. The best part, imo, is that the dog has already been fostered. You let someone else figure out the hard stuff (good with kids? separation anxiety? stranger aggressive? etc.) and you have a very good chance of finding a dog that fits right into your family

(Plus you don't have to deal with the puppy stages, which while they are cute, are also the most work!)
