Big babies!

I've been noticing the ladies here have grown some healthy sized little babes! I read months ago that may babies are often the heaviest of all the months (no idea why and I haven't found any other info on that). I'm hoping we have a nice sized little one!

Hmm... I've noticed that too. People in my Mom's generation seem to think that 8 lbs is HUGE for a baby. I don't know why that is - but at my baby shower we had a pool for due date and weight, and only one person put over 8 lbs. Most were around 6 lbs.

It's interesting about May babies being the largest month. I wonder why?

I'm still going with the "we were pregnant (and mostly past morning sickness) during the Thanksgiving/Christmas goodie season" theory.

I know, right? My grandmother got all wide eyed when I said my friend who looked tiny the whole pregnancy had a normal sized baby, almost 8 lbs. "8 pounds, that's huge!" My first was 8lbs11oz, I wonder if this one will hit 9? With all the sugar I've been eating lately I'll bet it will (not trying, just...cravings...and being awake at night).

That's because in their generation they were told to gain no more than 20-25 lbs. So naturally they produced smaller babies (generally).

Thank goodness that's not the case anymore!

That certainly makes sense. And I'm glad it's not the case either! I feel healthy, and like I have a nice healthy baby in my belly. This is my first so I have no clue how big she'll be, but we're betting 8lbs or so.

I noticed this too. Although I have to say I like my nice smallish babes.. 7.11 and 6.7 1/2. The mw are thinking this ones aroud 7lbs or so.

I'm thinking I'll have a bigger baby this time around but we shall see, I always notice larger babies in general being born in the MDC community.

It seems like everyone of the babies my MW has delivered while I've been pg has been 8+ pounds. My kids are scrawny--5.14, 6.4, 6.15. I was thinking this one might be close to 7.5lbs but my MW is like "Well see...seems like another little baby."

When my grandma was pregnant with my mom she gained 11lbs. Can you imagine?! I think I ate more than 11lbs. of food for dinner tonight! My mom was 4lbs,6oz at birth, so she gained all of 6.5lbs of non-baby weight? And my grandma has always been very fit, it's not like she started pregnancy very overweight or something. Yikes. I think I need another brownie...

wow 11 lbs!!! Thats how much I gained in the first month.
I'm a small person and I've gained about 40 lbs with one baby - I gained 45 lbs with my twins (but lost a lot of muscle weight being on bedrest). My mom only weighed 4 lbs too when she was born full term.

With both of my pregnancies, I only gained 20-25 lb and I have had 2 big babies. I am slightly heavy for my height but have not had GD either time. My mom was skinny as a rail and gained 40 lb with her 1st baby he was 9lb 8 oz.

Maybe it's April and May babies. My DS was born in April and weighed 10lbs12oz. My DD was born in May and weighed 10lbs7oz. Or maybe I just grow big babies

I think average baby size has went up a lot in the past 40 years, probably due to better nutrition/pre-natal care...I also watched a discovery channel show about how humans in general are getting bigger (not obesity, just bigger as in height, organ sizes, etc) every generation, and most animals do that, then they reach a maximum size, where smaller animals are actually at an advantage, and they start getting smaller every generation...I wish I could remember which show this was...it's definitely part of a running series, it might of been evolve.

But anyway, my biggest baby, Kincaid, was born in march at 7lbs 7ounces and my smallest baby, Janelle, was born in september at 5lbs 9ounces, Travis and River fit in the middle at 6lbs 14ounces and 6lbs. All 4 are bigger than I was, though Janelle only by 3 ounces, and all 4 are smaller than dh, Kincaid by about 1/2 a lb.

I stumbled on this thread form the New Posts feature and I just had to comment. I'm not so sure about the big May baby theory. I had an 11 lb. 0.2 oz February baby! I wonder how big he would have been if he had been a may due date?

The amount the mom gains does not necessarily reflect the size of the baby. I gained 19lbs with my first (and believe my I wasn't trying to be small!!)...he was 9lbs14oz (DEcember). I have gained 15lbs so far with this one...we shall see.

That's more than I've gained all 4 pregnancies combined. I always loose at least 30lbs in the first trimester (I had hyperemesis 3 out of 4 pregnancies...but I actually lost the most/regained the least with the 1 pregnancy I didn't have hyperemesis during) then slowly regain that. I ended my pregnancy with Janelle at +5lbs she was 5lbs 9ounces, I ended my pregnancy with Kincaid at 0 and he was 7lbs 7ounces (and I spent 2 months of this pregnancy in the hospital on complete bedrest being forced to eat a "triplet" diet by the nutritionist cause they really wanted me to gain something when they thought he would be born at 32 weeks...so I was getting no excercise and consuming a TON of calories), I ended my pregnancy with Travis at -17lbs he was 6lbs 14oz and I ended my pregnancy with River at -11lbs and he was 6lbs.

I don't know which study you read about but I read about this study, which says that babies born in late summer/early fall are the largest and strongest, owing to the sun (vitamin D) that mom soaks up during the last months of pregnancy.
