I have tried
DSQ prefolds size preemie, infant, regular, premium, and toddler.
GMD prefolds size brown-edged.
Gerber 100% cotton prefolds.
Standard 2x5x2 DSQ prefolds (but only for a short time).
My favorites were the regular 4x6x4's because they lasted for freaking ever, from 1 month until almost 2 years and they would have fit until potty training with doublers. I got some of them from Katie's Kisses, some of them from Nicki's Diapers, and some of them from Diaperaps. I sold them all when dd started outpeeing them, so now I have to rebuy for the new baby, and I'm trying to decide between buying from Dy-dee and Zannadu.
Preemies were too small at birth (even for my 6-pounder) and infants were too long and too narrow (GMD yellows would, I think, have worked fine). Premium prefolds were too bulky until she was 2, at which point the toddler size worked better. GMD browns worked great for a short period of time, but she outgrew them in the rise long before potty training. Gerber 100% cotton prefolds worked surprisingly okay but needed to be doubled or tripled. 2x5x2 prefolds were similar to Gerbers but higher quality.
I think I would have been better off getting some kind of specially newborn sized prefolds, keeping them and using them as doublers with the regulars when dd started outpeeing them. The toddler size worked wonderfully but she didn't wear them all that long.
Oh, and I used bleached and unbleached and found the unbleached to be softer, but the performance was equally good and I
bright white diapers hanging on a line.
