More Chat! May 17 - 22

This is the pathetic chat beginning again without links, my throat feels icky and I think I'm going to be dozing most of the day. I will put in a few real links, however far we get and up here, hopefully by this evening.

For all those lucky, lucky souls joining us (I occasionally engage in sarcasm, but it's always meant in a kind way), welcome! This is a place for us to chat about weird allergy stuff and the funny stuff that only occurs when you've got kids with dietary restrictions. Like when your biggest concern about your toddler stealing someone's beer at a party is the gluten, or you yell "Nooo!" when your toddler eats the crushed cracker from the floor of Target and again, it's the gluten you're mostly concerned about.

We normally have links in this first post that include threads people are still looking for input on and some of our great learning threads. Several of us have seen our kids' intolerances get better or worse based on how our detoxification is doing--that's how our livers get rid of chemicals we make like estrogen and cortisol, and also how we get rid of external chemicals like metals and food colorings/preservatives. Figuring out the extra nutrients we need to let our detoxification run smoother has been helpful for many of us, but it's still a work-in-progress learning about it.

eta: here is last week's chat.

DETOX/BIOCHEM thread links:

Jacqueline, I'm clearly a loser... how am I supposed to put all the links here? Or do I just link to your Chat Thread links page? But then I can't edit it, and you'll be doing the new-baby-thing pretty soon. I'm so .

Ok, does anyone else see the world through an MTHFR lens, nowadays? When I see crooked teeth, I wonder about the little v-shape; when I hear mamas can't nurse/thrush, I think, 'Hmmm...tongue tied?'; when I hear about other midline issues, I feel evangelical about nutrients...

Do your friends (spouse) glaze over when you start talking about folate, B12 and magnesium, too?

I look at everyone's lunulas. And every time I hear someone talking about ear tubes, I listen in. There were two women who were amazed by our dietary restrictions (mothers at swim class) and they said they were so glad they didn't have any. Both their kids had multiple ear infections and ear tubes (more than once), and both are on high doses of Miralax... yeah, uh, nothing wrong with them...

I want to check into the MTHFR gene (I love how that one is so easy to remember- hee hee) but I feel like my doctor thinks I'm wacky with the things they've tested me for.

My side is killing me and I feel really tired and icky. Usually UTIs don't phase me at all. This is annoying. I want to go back to the old symptoms. We have a confirmation party to go to this afternoon so I have to make all our food so we don't feel left out. What fun. I sound like I'm in a horrible mood. I'm going to go stick my head in the sand (or a book) and snap out of it.

I was just looking at AOL news, and it has a thing on urine colors:

"Don't freak out if your urine takes on a reddish tinge, Schlaudecker says. Eating blackberries, rhubarb or beets can tint your urine red. Interestingly, if you are anemic, you're more likely to have reddish urine after eating beets, he says. Other culprits: Iron sorbitol (a medication for anemia), ibuprofen or phenazopyridine (a med for urinary tract infections). The Mayo Clinic also reports that Ex-lax and some antipsychotic drugs can cause reddish urine."

We've talked about pH but not anemia as a cause.... hmm.... and "they" think it's normal...

Pat, I've actually mentioned it to at least two people IRL when they started talking about their health stuff, and I was looking at their kids and their teeth, among other things. And I'm considering a third, if I can confirm what I _think_ I remember reading about breast cancer and increased need for folate.

Kathy--we're the abnormal ones! Drugging everyone up is normal, thinking about magnesium or vitamin A or folate is bizarre. Figuring out what our bodies need to heal is weird.

It's too true. Some of my family is huge into meds=miracle recovery...I almost feel like I need to be a naturopath to counteract all the nurses and pharmacists running around...what!?! You don't medicate for fevers? (With both tylenol AND motrin? What is WRONG with you?

Such a skewed world view...:

About the l-lysine:

If I already have a wretched canker sore can I use it to help it heal faster? How would I do it? Topical or pill or what?

I've been meaning to ask. Do kids have lunulas? At what age do they develop? Can someone link me back to that thread on it Neitehr of my kids have lunulas but most of their friends don't either.

Hrm. I don't have it in the Chat thread links either.
I'm pretty sure whoMe posted it in last week's chat, but I'm so not digging right now. I'm just waking up.

And I'm another one constantly looking at people for allergic shiners, lunulas, messed up teeth etc.
And no, I don't think it is normal for kids not to have lunulaes, chlobo. It means they're deficient.

Wish us luck, we're adding eggs back in today. I think we're dealing with salicylate issues, and I want to stay GF/DF/SF for a couple of months at least. I can't handle the total meat overload, so I brought beans back in, and I'm going to bring eggs and peanuts back in on rotation (I *think* DS tolerates both well). Every four days for rotation, right?
Yes, four is the optimal number of days, I believe. Just because then you have a choice of what to serve (usually and assuming you're not dealing with multiple different diets like Kathy) and it allows one thing to get out of your system before being reintroduced.

When I was working our nursery school fair, I was checking out all the kids' fingernails (it was the week after the thread on it). DD1 has 4 of them (DH has all 10). DS and DD2 each have 2. I have 1.

Even when you are dealing with different multiple allergies, you can still rotate! I'm proof of that. Though, obviously, it makes you insane.

I know. I was saying that I think there are some days where you don't have a choice as to what to serve that day because there's only one "safe" food of whatever type.
And you're blaming the rotation now? :

Works for me! I use the capsule form cuz it's easy. I just read that itching ears are a sign for thyroid issues--I always have itchy ears! (I use a ton of q-tip swabs to (gently) scratch them...

Do you swallow the capsule or break open & smear on wound?

My ears itch all the time.
Speaking of rotating... I can think of a couple people I'd like to do so, one of whom is still lazing around in bed. :
