Our new guy is home! (plus, a few ?s)

Our new guy is home. : I posted about him a week or so ago. (See pic in post #5) He is a 2ish yr old Golden Retriever from a rescue. He is nameless at the moment. (We are calling him by the name the foster family has been calling him for a month now but we might rename) So far, he's been doing great. He is undergoing heartworm treatment right now so we have to keep him calm (so we can't work on his leash manners yet). But, so far, his house manners are great. Someone has obviously worked with him in the past. I admit to being slightly in love already.

Now to the questions... 1) We are using a crate. And, having never used a crate in the the past, we don't know what to do about water. Do you leave water in the crate with them if you are going to be gone a fair amount of time? Do you use on of those clip-on bottles like rabbits/gerbils use? Or a clip-on bowl?

2) How long should I let him keep eating his old food before I start transitioning him to what I want him to eat? I figured we would keep feeding him his old food for a bit while he settled in and then start mixing in the good stuff slowly. But, how long should I wait?

And, 3) Do dogs eventually get used to hardwood floors? Well, make that Pergo floors. Our old dog passed away before we moved here and we had carpet in the old house so I've never had to watch a dog slip and slide on the Pergo. It's not too bad as long as he doesn't try to take off quickly, but he does seem to walk a bit gingerly. Would clipping the hair from his pads help?

Thanks!

Question to you... does the dog go crazy in the crate or is he calm? if he is calm then a bowl the does/does not clip on the crate is great. you want to make sure the pup has clean water at all times!

at this point time is not the issue. you just want to make sure that when transitioning to the new food is slow so his body can adjust. IMO he would be fine to start now. if you do it slow enough he will not even know

Hardwood floors my short answer to this is no- however, he will be better at walking on them with time. i also have hardwood floors in my house and i have a dog that WILL not touch them and we have lived in the home for 3 years now. if you clip the hairs on the paws that will help. i would say- try putting down a runner in the walking areas. this will help your new friend get use to the area and he will have 'safe' areas to rush to.

CONGRATS on you new furbaby!

Yes, they do get used to it. We have nothing but wood in the house, with area rugs, and they do get used to it. And yes, trimming the nails (you should NOT be able to hear them clicking on the floor at all) and trimming (clipping) the hair between the pads will help.

As far as water in the crate, we use hanging buckets or clip on bowls. And let him eat what he is used to for a few weeks or a month and then switch. To much change at once can upset their bellies.

Congratulations!

Thought I would add a picture of our new friend! I've never used photobucket before, so I hope this works! :

Does he have a name yet? How about Rufus (the red?) Or Molson (Golden)?

He is very very cute.

He is just beautiful

They do get used to the hardwood, we recently tore out the hallway carpet for laminate, our large dog did crash once but has now learned to walk down the hall.

I would start the switch now, just go slow, 3/4th to 1/4 for a bit, then 1/2 and 1/2 and so on.
