Another guess that breed please! (updated with more pics)

We just adopted this guy. We've been working with a local rescue for a while to find the perfect dog for our family. He's the sweetest guy. So good with the kids and already knows several commands. He's the epitome of a gentle giant. The rescue though some kind of coonhound mix but aren't sure.

Here's a pic

He's very big. About 90 lbs. Tall and skinny and black and brown all over.

Any guesses? I'll try to get more pics.

His muzzle is long and slender without much of a break. That is common among greyhounds and collies although his face looks collish. I would say a collie x. The color is that of a hound dog but I think too many people focus on the color of a coat vs the features the dog has and features are more important then color.

i think the dog looks collie-ish too. collies are very smart, i have heard.

the color though. not sure about that. i would look at the top of the head shape and how far back the ears sit. that will be a big clue, also the breadth between the shoulders and the stock of the hindquarters. i am not an expert but i know these are main points for determining breed.

I agree that his head looks "houndy". It would be nice to see his body, though. Congrats on your new addition!

I see Dobe in his head more than hound or Collie. It's not a great Dobie head, but that's the first thing I thought. Rescues are horrible at guessing breeds. They probably thought Coonhound because of his coloring. But he looks like Doberman to me. That would make sense with the size, too, and it's far more likely numbers-wise, to have a Dobe mix in a rescue than a Coonhound. But the Coonhound sounds more romantic, I guess.

You are very lucky if he's a Dobe mix. They are awesome, velcro dogs. They ADORE their people and will just sit and love you and cling to you everywhere you walk.

He seems to be afraid of the camera for some reason so I'm having a hard time getting a pic of him.

It's weird, I was looking at dog breeds and his heads is so much like a Borzoi but not the rest of him. I doubt he is part Borzoi because they aren't very common. Is there a borzoi like dog? His body is very long and narrow.

A borzoi to me looks like a greyhound with long fur

No, the head is not Borzoi at all.

It's Dobe.

Honest.

OK I believe you! lol Why do dobermans have such a bad rep though?
I just don't see doberman. Granted, I have never owned one, so I don't have a lot of "up close and personal" experience, and I am very knowledgeable about hounds. Salukis, whippets, greyhounds. So, I guess I would still like to put a vote in for a sight hound.
BUT, I do have to say that your dobe argument is string, especially considering his size (and weight!) and coloring.
So, you (pp) could very well be right, I just don't see it. =)

Dobe/Collie? Dobe/Lab? It's hard to tell because he's SOOO skinny. Poor baby. But that head is definitely Dobe. It could look sighthound-ish, but what they told you is Coonhound (scenthound), so I really doubt it. The chances of a Coonhound (or a sighthound) mix are so slim.. But there are Dobes all over the place and Collies and Labs, too.

So I am thinking because of the longer body that he is mixed with Collie.

He is SO sweet looking. I hope he's getting lots of love and treats.

Dobes have a bad rap for the same reason other breeds do... stupid owners and bad breedings. The breed is actually one of the BEST with kids, and they are fantastic loving family dogs. They are just beautiful, too. My old housekeeper had one and he was just the best. So loving and he would LEAN on your legs if you stood by him. SO sweet.

I had a dobie mix...she was an awesome dog...I adopted her as an adult and we spent 14 wonderful years together. I loved her so much.

She was so, so sweet. She thought she was a lapdog. She was very polite and didn't take up too much space in the bed She was also patient and tolerant with my kids. (She wasn't the brightest dog...but she tried really, really hard!)

I think you have a dobie mix.

My guess is dobie/greyhound cross.

There's probably some collie in there, you're right he looks like he has a Borzoi head. There could be some greyhound in there too. Living in Australia the colouring made me immediately think of kelpie but there's nothing else Kelpie about him (except maybe the feathering on his long tail).

Well, he is a toughie to guess. He is underweight, but looking past that...

Very exaggerated long head, roach back (roach back is a big clue), tail attempting to feather... I see Greyhound, Coonhound, Colllie.

Where do you live? Around here Coonhound mixes, as well as things like Treeing Walker Coonhound mixes, scenthound mixes in general, are pretty common.

Even if something is uncommon does not make it impossible. My dog is Saint Bernard, Great Pyrenees, and Akbash Dog. None of those are common to be mixed into a puppy, and mine is all three (yes I saw the parents).

How can we get him to put on more weight? We've been offering a lot but he's not eating much. They said at the rescue that he was a big eater.

I don't see much coonhound, but you would know if he was a coonhound as soon as he opened his mouth to bark. They have a very distinctive bay. We have a 7mo old coonhound lab mix and she has a much shorter snout and bays like the dickens. It just doesn't sound like any other dog bark.

I agree with the collie, borzoi, greyhound, dobie comments. The ears are not looking too much like hound ears, either. Our mix girl doesn't have extremely long hound ears, but they do droop and she's got a bit of jowliness. Her ears have a bit more of a lab look to them.

He could have some coonhound in him, but unless he's baying I wouldn't bet on it being a whole lot. There are a lot of other breeds with that coloring— dobies and rotties spring to mind, but there are a lot of others, too. Growing up we had a little mutt— maybe poodle mix—with that coloring, but 30lbs ish with soft curly hair. I think that his coat is maybe thicker than coonhounds, too. Our girl has an extremely slick short glossy coat — slicker than most labs I have met. I wonder if your guy could even have a little shepherd in his background?

Coonhound mixes are actually extremely common in rural areas as they are very, very common breeds in rural locales. Our girl came from about 15 miles north of our small city in a rural area.

I'm going to go with a Doberman/Shepherd mix with possibly a little greyhound in there. Do a google image search on that and see what you think.

Another vote for greyhound cross here--especially because of the "rose" ears, crouching-ish hind end, and the long tail. But the head width makes me think rottie/greyhound? The rottie would account for the size and colour. I see lots of sighthound in him, which SIGH makes me miss my beloved grey, Argus. Your pup is gorgeous, whatever he is.
