I just don't see much coonhound at all. Take a look at these pix of the
black and tan coonhound. Huge ears, droopy eyes, jowly droopy lips — they just don't have that pointy nose your sweet guy has. Really, though, a hound mix with much of the hound in it is going to be completely obvious when it barks. Does he bay?
German Shepherd's also come in black and tan so the coloring could be from that side.
That nose really looks collie-ish or greyhoundish to me, but I'm far from expert in those breeds, and I would think a collie would hand down a heavier coat as well unless it was smooth coated and that would be a really rare mix.
Of course, he's a MIX! So he could have some of everything that everyone has mentioned on here in him. There are several pictures of doberman-german shepherd mixes that turn up with a google search that look a lot like him, but I imagine those were all guesses, too.
Coonhounds as a rule, bay very distinctively, jump up a lot, sometimes actually climb trees, are very hard to contain in a fence because they will jump it, climb it, dig under it. They dig a lot, and frequently have something in their mouths. They will chew a lot and our mix loves to steal the kids' toys and run around playing catch me if you can. They're extremely friendly — our girl is overly so and won't back down when told "no", but she is still a puppy. She loves to play fetch, too. Coonhounds love being outside and if they don't get enough exercise they can be destructive inside. They are scenthounds so keep their noses to the ground and often lose track of where they are in relation to, say, an invisible fence. And they love water, like labs. Coonhounds will jump right in.
hth and hope you enjoy your sweet boy!
