working from home??

I am trying to find some kind of legitimate work from home opportunity. I'm not looking to make thousands a month (I am much more realistic than that) but am having trouble finding anything that doesn't absolutely reek SCAM to me. Just curious if anyone out there has been successful in this area or am I just chasing my tail?

What do you do now/did you do before kids?

I work from home now--and I matched my old salary. I started my own company handling sales and marketing for much smaller companies than where I used to work. I basically do my old job, but for a few tiny companies, as a consultant. I started an LLC and they all pay me separately, pre-tax. It's worked out great--it will be two years in June. I found most of my clients through connections--but the the largest client came from answering an ad in my trade magazine (Publishers Weekly) and sending them a blind proposal to be a consultant instead of an employee. I work about 30 hours each week.

I also know some people who sell Barefoot Books on commision--more of your standard work from home sales job--and it seems reputable and like any sales job--you can get back what you put into it but it is hard work.

I am an RN currently at a pediatric hospital. I don't know that I want to get SO involved that I start my own company because EVENTUALLY I plan to go back to work, just unsure when and need money before then. I've looked some into medical billing/transcription but again I'm having trouble with the scam factor along with needing more certification to do those things.

That sounds like a good avenue to explore though--something within your field so you can innately tell if it is a scam. Also, when you go through your day, try to take note of things that are currently outsourced or things that are really problematic for people in your department to take care of. That could turn into a small stay at home job.

I started an LLC, which was not that big a deal--I did it through my local community college/small business administration--it just keeps me from working "under the table" basically.

You could pose the question in the WAHP well, there are some mamas there who do medical transcription. I have heard it's hard to break into, but it sounds like you have a serious leg up being an RN.

WAHP - work at home parent
WAHM - work at home mom

I work from home as a freelance writer and have matched my previous full time income. If you're looking for a bit of part time money, you could try sites like Demand Studios - they pay a flat $15 per article. If you presented yourself as a medical writer, you could probably earn a great income in not much time.

There are also call center jobs - LiveOps is one company that comes to mind.

If you check out www.wahm.com, there are lots of ideas for legit jobs there.

You're welcome.

Some sites to start with :

Upfront Pay: - weekly/monthly

Demand Studios
Bright Hub
QualityGal

Job Leads

www.freelancewritinggigs.com
www.online-writing-jobs.com

Forums:

www.digitalpoint.com
www.sitepoint.com

A lot of people also write for residual income at Suite101, Demand Studios, and eHow. I personally don't have much time to do this, as I spend most of my time doing client work.

there's some great tips in this forum so I'm going to bump it up and see what else the MDC group has to say on this topic. I'm looking into Demand Studios right now, does anyone have any experience with them?

I have been happy working from home for the past 3 years.  I live in a rural town now and help families by brokering legal services.  I was recently awarded on of the top 10 producers in the nation.  With online conferencing and a cell phone I can work from my cabin and not miss time with my family.  I would be glad to give you an overview, you can see if it's up your alley.  Storm Caley  (see me on Facebook)  stormcaley@gmail.com

I signed up as a writer for Demand a few months ago, but every time I went onto the site to check out article topics, there was nothing even remotely "normal" listed.  There were a lot of very technical topics in areas in which I have zero knowledge.  I have a master's degree in business and I searched for weeks to find anything I could write on that was even remotely in my field...nothing.  How do you get the good and normal article topics?
