What are the angsty kids listening to these days?

Apparently I got old and stopped listening to the crappy music these young people play nowadays (in my days... ).

I occasionally hear stuff on the radio, but it's all Jonas Brothers or rappish or otherwise formulaic and processed.

What is this generation's equivalent to The Smiths, or The Cure from my days, Lou Reed, Bowie or Pink Floyd from the 70s, Nirvana etc of the 90s?

Someone enlighten me. I don't want to get stuck in the old people stage of "in my days..."

What modern stuff do I need to listen to, to restore my faith in young people today

It's more moody than angry, but you could try art-rock bands like Arcade Fire or The Decembrists.

For noisy, you've got your Flogging Molly and Fratellis. Other smart-youngun's type bands would be the Arctic Monkeys, Neutral Milk Hotel, Fleet Foxes, Andrew Bird, and I'm sure many more that I'm too old and unhip to know about!

They are probably listening to the same stuff we did and thinking how cool and retro it makes them.

Try "My Chemical Romance" also. Thats the first band that came to mind.

Well, I'm old and cranky, but I freaking love Arcade Fire.

Also, check out the Frames! So, so amazingly good. It's Glen Hansard's band -- the guy who starred in Once?

I am so pissed right now that last.fm and Pandora no longer work outside the US. I would love to plug a bunch of these into a station.

Flogging Molly sounds like the Pogues.

New Pogues music *happy sigh*

I'm still going through Thalia's suggestions (each youtube video leads to another ), what do they call the genre? So I can google up some internet radiostations and stuff. Damn, its rejuvenating!

XFM London plays a lot of these bands, and more. I've been listening to their online stream since 1999 - http://xfm.co.uk - keeps me sane when all our local radio stations play is country or classic rock.

My 14 yo kid listens to some really great music and some just plain awful music.

The great and the decent:

The Get Up Kids, the New Amsterdams, My Chemical Romance, Blink-182, the Cure, Coldplay, the Decemberists, Queen, the Shins, Feist, Wilco, Flogging Molly,

The not so good:

We the Kings. (yuck)

Some that I have no opinion on (because I just don't listen to it):

The Weepies, Vampire Weekend, the Volunteers, KT Tunstall, Iron & Wine, Thriving Ivory, the Twilight Soundtrack, the Academy is..., the Arcade Fire

Honestly, most of the stuff she listens to is solid. She doesn't listen to the radio, I'm assuming most stuff isn't top 40 type crap. The only hip-hop she listens to is musically solid stuff like Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli (this family loves us some Chali 2na), some latin stuff and some french stuff, and that's mainly DH's influence.

There's so much out there now, and it is so easily accessible. Kids have to actually seek out crap, rather than being stuck listening to it because they have no other option.

Try www.pandora.com and type in a band you'd like to find similar stuff for... it's pretty cool.

Pandora doesn't work outside the US (maybe UK too?) and last.fm, which used to be great now makes people outside the US pay :

that XFM station iris linked is great though, but a radio station, not responsive like pandora.

You can go to amazon.com, search for a band like the Get Up Kids, and then they have that section "what other people who searched for the Get Up Kids bought". That helps broaden your horizons a little, especially if you don't have access to pandora (which I honestly really dont' like anyway).
