Favorite "Road Trip" Foods?

Ahh...the infamous "Road Trip".

I am in need of REAL "Road Trip" FOOD. I know about nuts and stuff. But to be honest, nuts and seeds to NOTHING for my hunger on the road. NOTHING.

What are some filling "RT" foods that you like? We always do cheese and meat slices...but there has to be more.

What do yo like to take on teh road? (We always have a cooler wtih us).

Thank you!

We take Pringles (guilty pleasure and only eaten on road trips, so I don't feel to bad), popcorn, apples and trail mix.

If you can bring a small cooler, you'll have a lot more possibilities. We love sandwiches when we travel. Egg Salad, Tofu Salad, Hoagies and Meatloaf sandwiches are some favorites!

Crackers, cheese, fresh fruit, trail mix, yogurts and popcorn are also fun snacks.

Hard cooked eggs
Any filling dip like hummus along with veggies to dip in it
For salad sandwiches (egg salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, etc.), I always prefer pitas - they tend to be less messy than regular bread.

Sometimes I'll make piroshki which is essentially stuffed bread (I do meat usually). They're definitely better warm, but they're completely self-contained and keep well in the fridge.

Depending on how long the trip is going to be, I make a thick yogurt dish that's a blend of yogurt, cream cheese, honey, fruit and (plain) gelatin. Packed in single serve (reusable) containers it's less messy than regular yogurt (because of the gelatin), while still having the benefits of being sweet and fatty and yogurt. It doesn't last more than 2-3 days in an ice chest, though.

Of course, your self-contained foods like apples are also always a good option - just remember to keep a washcloth on hand and a bottle of water for wiping sticky hands/faces.

We traditionally make pepperoni rolls(stuffed bread). We make them roll-sized, they're fine at room temperature and satisfying.

We just took a 6+ hour road trip and took peanut butter and jelly and bread to make sandwiches, apples, baby carrots, Sunchips (my treat), cookies (Dh's treat) and water. It was so nice to have the fruit and veggies, not just junk food. I am thinking of taking a veggie tray next time.

We make pizza and eat it cold!

Drumsticks are easy to transport and easy to eat. I'm planning some cut veggies, hummus (obviously for stops) and whole fruit (which my 3yo and 5yo can eat while we drive, if need be).

Thanks for the idea about the pepperoni/pizza rolls. Those are going on my list!

Any specific recipes?

Road trips for us have a good amount of foods that we don't normally eat. One of those is sausage balls. It's the basic 1 pound sausage, 2 cups cheese, 2 cups bisquick recipe. They are good right out of the cooler.

We also do some cut up veggies and dip, apples, bananas (my family doesn't mind if they get brown, which they usually do), and I particularly love those little bitty cracker sandwiches with the day-glo "cheese" inside. But, that's just me. LOL
