spin-off questions

hi,

i'm wondering about the inability to mention other threads in your thread.... if it's a spin-off don't you need to get some of the background from the original thread?

also, i'm assuming that you are not allowed to reference other threads because you shouldn't be talking about other people without them knowing it... but if the spin-off is in the same forum couldn't you assume that the person who started the original would see it?

thanks!

You can discuss other threads as long as it isn't *negative*

As long as one doesn't intend to be negative about another thread there is no issue.

Glad to know that's changed, as that (the bolded) had been my experience, too! You're right, that does make much more sense!

That hasn't changed, it has always been that way?

I've noticed that people aren't allowed to mention other people's threads like "I remember from your last 7 threads that your husband has done this before. You really need to get out." And then a mod comes and say "no referencing another thread" and people are supposed to give advice in a vacuum.

Typically when someone responds in such a manner it is not in a kind way. If someone is being really nice then it wouldn't be as much of an issue but it is something we are always happy to look at.

It is one of those rules that has to be looked at on an individual basis IMO. It isn't something that I am willing to say "X and Y is ALWAYS BAD!" or that it is always ok either.

abimommy answered your main question about discussing other threads but I wanted to comment on this part of your post. Just because it's in the same forum doesn't mean that the original poster, or any poster in that thread keeps up with all the threads in that forum, I know myself when time is tight and I have been away for a few days (or even hours because the forum is so active) there are many threads that go unread even in the areas that I would love to read every post. Also I will sometimes post in a forum that I only occasionally visit because that's where the discussion - question belongs and I will keep up with that thread, not the whole forum.
