This was my easiest labor, but least satisfying, because I never did get my game face on. I couldn't get a pattern going, so they hung the Pit with my total wholehearted consent at 1:10 pm. The I asked for an epidural and got one at 2:20. I was exhausted, tearful, upset and distracted as hell. I hardly slept the night before. My mother pointed out that I would be trapped in the bed if I got the epi, and I said "I want to be." I was totally disassociated from everything.
I just didn't want it.
OK, now it gets better. I was at six cm when they placed the epidural and cranked up the Pit. Less than two pain-free hours later, I was complete and ready to push. I pushed for less than five minutes, free of discomfort, and Helen was born at 4:23 p.m. Her vitals remained great despite the ocean of drugs I had pumped into me. She is now less than four hours old and has peed twice, pooped once and nursed copiously.
She weighed 8lbs 4oz at birth - a pound more than my last baby, and my biggest baby yet. My lacerations were the least serious I've ever had - the doctor was accepting of my NO EPISIOTOMY stance and actually rubbed my perineum with mineral oil and coached me through a slow, controlled delivery. I had never been able to obey such instructions before on account of the soul-crushing pain. I guess I picked the right time to use drugs, if there is such a thing.
