Dark Green Poop unhappy baby help!!

Thread Starter
I have low supply and am taking motilium. Since DS was 3 weeks old, have fought with gassy, fussy and constipated. When he does go, it is thickish and dark green. I have read that green poop is a sign of a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance but it is usually associated with moms who have an oversupply. I definitely don't have that!

My ped is so unconcerned that it pisses me off. My son does not have the typical breastfed poop that you would expect - mustardy and seedy. And he seems to have stomach aches all the time. He only goes every two or three days and sometimes only when I use a glycerin suppository.

What do you guys think?

How old is baby now? And how is his growth?

The foremilk/hindmilk thing is a myth, you may want to look into what you are eating that may be giving your ds problems.

In addition to PatioGardners questions, does your ds have any signs of allergies? Have you considered switching peds?

I would like to see any resources you have on this because I've never ever hear about a milk imbalance being a myth.

- sorry that your LO isn't feeling well.
I just wanted to share my experience with you. I didn't have very low supply but struggled with, I guess you could call it, borderline supply. Anyway, I took fenugreek for a while and was puzzled by DS2's green BMs (they were runny too). I finally stopped taking the herb and switched to taking Dom whenever I felt that my supply needed a boost. Once I stopped taking the herb, he stopped having green poops. However, if I took too much Dom (like 6 pills/day), he too seemed like he had stomach cramps. It makes sense because Domperidone is a medicine that increases the movements or contractions of the stomach and bowel. Alas, I really didn't have anything that worked well for me other than oatmeal cookies (or Dom in low doses).

HTH.

Any idea why block feeding helps then? That solved my LO's bloody/green stool problem pretty fast.

Check out Creagan MD & Hartmann PE 1999. They found that fat content does not vary significantly within feedings, but that individual feedings may contain more or less than other feedings. How much fat a baby is taking in is also dependent on how efficiently they nurse, an increased rate of milk removal = steeply increased fat content. I was just certified to be a CLC with the Healthy Children Project and they were very explicit about this being a myth. There are also cultures where children only nurse 1-2 minutes on average each nursing and they do not have these supposed foremilk/hindmilk problems.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, I was unable to find anything with the information you provided. Maybe you have a link?

I just have to comment... Domperidone transfer is so low that it's incredibly unlikely it causes baby to have tummy issues. The transfer rate through BM is significantly lower than the theraputic use of it in infants and children directly.

I have read that as well. However, there definitely was a connection between my use of the drug and my baby's distress. I do understand that it's unusual, but I wanted to share my experience with the PP just as a possibility to consider.

Someone mentioned food allergies and I think that is possible. I know two other moms whose babies always had dark green poop anytime the moms ate dairy and then BF. You might want to check that out.

to the person who says foremilk/hindmilk thing is a myth.... well many people believe that food allergies causing green poop and gas in breastfeeding babies is also a myth. Even Kellymom.com makes a point to say this is very unusual.

but... when you have a baby that clearly only barfs amd cries when you eat garlic or when you know what if feels like to have oversupply issues etc, then it doesnt really matter what any given organization has to say on the matter yk?
