When I use cotton diapers on my 8 month old son, I hardly ever smell urine at all. But when I use BumGenius, the smell is so strong that it's just plain overwhelming. Is this because they are synthetic fibers? Has anyone else noticed this? After they're washed in Charlie's Soap there is no more urine smell. And, the smell is strong almost immediately after peeing - it's not like it's been in there for very long. Thanks!

That can indicate that there is buildup in the synthetic fibers. You can't smell it until the baby actually pees on there. I would try stripping them and perhaps changing to a different detergent. While some people have good luck with Charlie's, there have been a lot of complaints about the detergent causing problems. It is worth a try to change to something different, but i would recommend attempting to strip first.

I had the same problem with my PUL-fleece-microfiber diapers (not BG but same materials) and was at my wit's end with the stink. We had the same issue - no smell when dry but as soon as they get wet, the stench was released. I stripped them in Dawn and washed them with bleach and neither worked. Finally, Calgon did the trick. I boiled them in water with Calgon added (about 1/4 cup of the powder in a big corn pot). I was paranoid about ruining the PUL so only really dipped them in the boiling water for less than 5 minutes. And it did the trick! Now I add 2 tablespoons of Calgon to each wash along with about 1/8 cup of Nature Clean and this has kept the stink away. My son hardly ever poops these days so I stopped doing a prewash but added an extra rinse and an extra spin at the end.
I also spritz each diaper with a weak TTO and water solution from a spray bottle before throwing them in the drypail to keep bacteria from growing while they wait to be washed.
I feel your stink pain, it's so baaaaddddd....

I feel your stinky pain! The same thing happened to me with my BG's. I have really hard water so it was really hard to get them to rinse clean. (Not to mention the drying time was ridiculously looong!) No matter how many times I rinsed them the water was always a teeny bit soapy. I found that 2 cold rinses, a hot wash (with a tsp. of regular Tide) followed by 3 more cold rinses and sunning is the only routine that kept my stink to a minimum. I still stripped them every 3 months just for good measure. I got tired of dealing with my BG stink and switched to Sposo Easy by Blue Penguine. I have had them for about 6 months now and have not had the stinks.
: I am assuming this is b/c they are 100% cotton. Good Luck!
