When do you have nakey bum time?

I try to give DS (4 months) time each day with no diaper to help his bum air out and prevent diaper rash. Whenever I do, though, he pees three or four times. I asked EC mamas this question, and they said if he's peeing 3-4 times in a 15-20 minute period, he is probably not sure it's OK to go there. They suggested I sort of do some EC before I put him down to make sure his bladder is empty, and to keep plenty of towels on hand in case of accidents.

When do you have nakey time--when during your routines? After nap, before a feeding? Does your LO always go during this time?

DS is 13 months and we let him run around naked after his bath in the evening... or if we are in the backyard playing in his baby pool he is naked there. Sometimes he pees, sometimes he doesn't.

I always did nakey time with infants in the middle of the morning, right after a nap, when it was warm in the house and they were fresh and rested. I would just lay them on a towel or a pile of prefolds. My kids sometimes peed a bunch of times, and sometimes not at all. I never really paid attention. It baby pees, just have towels or diapers handy to clean up. Do you have a place with no carpeting where baby can play? It's easier to clean up pee that way.

I never had nakey time, but she went coverless around the house almost all the time and this prevented diaper rash.

Juliacat - I've been wondering how people pull this off. If the baby is coverless, don't you end up with pee on everything (your shirt, sling, carpet, etc.)? I'd like to let my little guy air out a bit more by leaving off the cover, but he'll pee through a prefold (even with a microfiber insert inside the prefold) really quickly.

LDSmomma - Is the thinking that he's not sure it's OK to go there, so he just pees a little bit at a time instead of completely voiding his bladder all at once? Are you already doing EC or are you planning to start now? I'm interested in trying EC, but it seems like it would be SO difficult to catch pees with a boy (due to the...trajectory of the pee).

My mom bought me some waterproof lap pads to put under the baby prior to the crawling stage. They worked quite well. Once she started crawling/walking, I just checked frequently.

Yes, apparently he thinks it's not OK to go, once he realizes he's not peeing into a diaper, so he stops the pee, but still has a full bladder, so he tries again a few minutes later. At least that's how I understand it.

I think EC sounds very difficult, too, so I don't want to do it, but I thought EC mamas might know when the best nakey time would be... or the least likely to pee time of the day/routine is.

We don't do regular nakey time... I let her bum air out when I change her though.

Interesting...

I just lay a waterproof mat on the floor (actually, it's a Mother of Eden mat that looks like their changing pads, only it's huge.) and I put her down for a while after I change her. Usually it's at the end of the day, but sometimes it's not. She will sometimes pee once on the mat, sometimes she won't pee at all. I don't think she cares where she pees--she's peed down my clothes several times when I'm carrying her back to the changing table, so it's all good. :

We have bare bum naps once a day, as long as we are at home. The timing each day is pretty random. DS naps in his crib so I put down a waterproof pad with a thick flannel receiving blanket on top. You have never seen a happier baby than when he is put in his crib with no diaper! He loves these naps. Incredibly, he doesn't pee or poo most of the time. He almost always pees within moments of being picked up after waking so I put a diaper on while he's still in the crib. (Though I should try EC, this would be a prime opportunity.) When he does pee or poo in the crib, he usually wakes up to let me know and it's not too bad to clean up. I just scoop up the dirty receiving blanket, wipe off DS with a clean corner of it, drop it in the drypail and hang the waterproof pad over the side of the crib to air dry.

I always did tummy time and naked time at the same time. I would just put a waterproof pad and a towel or something under him and let him play. And i know this baby (due Aug) will get even more tummy time, since I now know my last babe didn't get enough! Times of the day were random.

Now he is 2, and I still give him naked time. He loves running around the house like that and he's more inclineded to try to sit on his potty if he is naked. The bad part now is sometimes he gets really ticked when I try to put clothes back on him!

We don't have a regular time- he is usually diaperless right after a bath and for a few minutes when I am changing him. He doesn't like to be naked though so will follow me around with a diaper if I leave it off for too long.

Hi- I was here with a diapering question and saw your post. I'm one of the EC mamas who responded to your question in that forum. I think what we were trying to say was that babies just pee that often, and you probably didn't realize it, since he had a diaper on the other times. What you described doesn't sound frequent to me, and babies just pee when they are ready to, regardless of where! At least mine does! Even at 13 months, she may pee 3 times in a fifteen minute period. (She will also go longer, but just now she peed twice within five minutes!) I was just suggesting that you hold him over a bowl or something before you lay him down for nakey time, since you already know he's going to pee. It makes sense to me. For me, offering a chance to go potty over a bowl has been easier than changing wet diapers, and then adding to the laundry, but every one is different. You might just experiment with different times of day, and just be aware of the fact that some babies really do like to pee once that diaper is off! That's what waterproof pads and towels and prefolds, etc. are for.

Some (many) people do part time EC, and that can be offering the potty one time a day or anything more than that. Babies are really adaptable and go with the flow!

I hope you find a good nakey time for you guys!

As for ECing with boys, veedeepee, my understanding is that there is some pointing and aiming that takes place! I just have the one girl, so I don't have experience with that!

That's exactly what I've decided to do! He usually pees two or three times during this period, and I've been dealing with some frequent loose stools due to a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance, (which finally cleared up today!!) so he usually poops once during the time, too!

His floor gym is water proof on the bottom, so I put a few towels on top of it, and let him play with the toys above, or give him tummy time. He's expert at rolling off the "designated" pee area and peeing on the carpet, or aiming the pee off the area. At least I'll have funny stories for his girlfriends in about 16 years!

cool! oh yeah, I forgot until you mentioned it, they do have a way of rolling off designated pee areas! and girls can have quite the long distance pee stream as well!
