The good thing about this controversy is that a lot of people are subscribing to Mothering because of it .

Its great that so many people wrote in in support of mothering and breastfeeding, though. Hopefully the people who made the original comments will grow up a bit!

Yeap I saw that while mdc was down and it is just very sad and frustrating that that picture would offend anyone...WTH?!?!?!?

Well that is a good thing...I wish I had found Mothering sooner!

i know! compared to trash like maxim, how can anyone find this cover offensive? i think it's beautiful. you gotta wonder what kind of issues people have if they find a picture like that disturbing. CK's Mama..,you are so right...i there was a picture of a baby being fed a bottle...no one would have a problem with it. and for those of us that WOULD have a problem with it...no one would listen. :

Its crazy what offends people. Look at a cosmo cover for instance. Are they offended by that. Breasts are made to feed a baby, that is what they are for, but most people don't like to associate them with their function only their decoration

The funniest thing that i've seen is what I saw at my local Borders today. They moved the Mothering magazine from it's normal spot to the rack behind it. They switch it with a Fit Pregnancy magazine where they was a pregnant woman with a bikini type thing on. She was laying in a suggestive pose. How is this less offensive than a nursing mom. My DH promptly switched the magazines back to their previous positions.

I emailed mothering to let them know I thought it was a great cover. I figured they maybe getting some negative thoughts, so I would send them some positive.

Oh puhleeze! What irritates me the most is that the woman's actual breast is pretty much hidden behind that beautiful babe's face and mouth in the cover picture!

Some of those Cosmo cover ladies are wearing stuff so tight I can not only see their nipples, I can see what they had for breakfast!!!! So annoying.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the cover was "Oh boy, this is gonna get some heat." : But I'm glad they did it, and yes, all those other crappin' mags out there with women wearing skimpy crap and then airbrushed to make it look even less. Ticks me off man.

Complain about something worth complaining about will ya for crissakes???

I don't think it's the breast at all that is getting people riled up - after all, as we all said, naked breasts are shown EVERYWHERE.

I think its the fact that you can see by the baby's mouth that is actually sucking on the mom's nipple (since its slightly extended) and the baby has its hand touching the breast.

There's lots of different "levels" of porn. For example, Playboy shows naked women, but I don't think it will actually show women's open labia - more likely its slightly covered by hair, or turned away from the camera. Playboy also wouldn't show someone actually sucking on a nipple (I think). Other mags - more "hard core" might show someone actually fondling a breast, or someone's mouth near a nipple or body part. Showing someone *actually" sucking or licking is even more hard core.

So I think it really is people reacting to the actual process, the reality of breastfeeding. Its not the breasts at all, the breasts are a smokescreen. Its the thought of a baby sucking on a women's breast that some people can't handle. That's the only way to explain why people get upset with moms bfing in a booth at a restuarants, when in reality they can't see any breast at all. I know I felt uncomfortable when my baby made "sucking noises" in public - it sounded too much like "sex" - my only frame of reference at the time. Probably for other people, too. I know with my first dd, I was okay nursing, but it took me awhile to accept the thought of her *hand* on my breast, or her *twiddling* with my other nipple. There's probably alot of other women out there, who only *feed at the breast* (for the health benefits only), and don't accept the skin-to-skin, the "touching" part of breastfeeding a baby.

That baby is caressing the breast, and not just actively nursing at the moment of the picture. Some people can't understand or accept any "recreational" hanging out at the breast, by the baby.

Janice

(No flames please - the above is NOT my opinion about NIP - I am NOT defending this - I'm just trying to understand why people react to so storongly to NIP, sometimes when no breast is visible at all)

I just don't get it tho! Why is it that people don't even think twice when they see an add showing someone licking or sucking on a finger? Fingers AND mouths can be VERY sexual, but their inherent purpose is not for sex. This is EXACTLY how I view the breast. Why is one body part 'o.k' and another is not? Who gets to make these descisions? A baby nursing is a baby eating, not one deriving sexual pleasure. This stuff just bugs the crap outta me.

One of the most beautiful Mothering covers

Just wanted to express a personal perspective on the recent Mothering cover that has resulted in media attention. I found the cover soft and warm and absolutely beautiful. My 10-month-old DD happily giggled at the cover, at the image of a peer enjoying what she also enjoys -- snuggling next to mama drinking in warm milk and love.

Keep up the great covers, Mothering!

so cute, happy_mama35, my 15 month dd loves it so much too...she points and says milky (or her word for it, which sounds like gluck) and kisses the baby.....and just smiles so much.

its so important for my house and my family to have that on the table for her and all to see!

My 30 month old loved the cover, too. She smiles and tells me that there's a baby having "nonnie" (what we call nursing for her). It mever occured to me that there was a problem with the cover. LoL. I guess I'm just kind of oblivious.

Me neither....the thought that THAT cover could/would possible offend someone didn't even cross my mind and once I heard that there was a mothering "controversy" that cover was NOT one of the things that popped into my mind as to what the "controversy" was. I still don't get it...seriously what is the big deal? (but then again, I don't see why people get offended when I NIP).

Also wanted to add that my boys loved the cover

We just moved, and my mom got some of my mail. My issue happened to be in with some of the stuff she had for me. I laughed when I saw the cover. I'm sure she almost had a heart attack. (She never nursed any of us. I think she has some hang-ups)

I think that the cover was awesome. My 2.5 year old agreed. She saw the cover and said, "Baby having momma mmmmm" and smiled.
