minera vs Paraguard what the difference

Please help! I currently have Minera IUD and I am getting it romoved next week because I have uncontrollable mood swings and depression from it. Also I took Depo Provera once before years and had the same side effects from the same hormone that is both. So...I need new Birth control ASAP. I heard of paraguard, but I dont know what the difference is and if it will affect my emotional status as well. Im already in a very brittle state when it comes to my quality of happiness with my new baby and family. I am losing it emotionally. I cannot afford to get pregnant again becuase I had gestational diebetes, crohn's desease, and I could barely walk before my daughter was born with excrutiating painful pregnancy. So please help, anyone know of a better guaranteed form that will not kill me? LOL
My boyfriend will not sustain from sex so that is not an option either.
Thanks. I was wondering also if there was a pill that wouldnt cause me to be so emotional. Ug,

Ok, your non hormonal options are the paragard and tubal legation. (that is the ones that are more accurate anyhow.) My insurance covers both... but yours may not. The paragard does not use hormones, it uses copper instead. Somehow the copper prevents pregnancy but it is unknown as to how or why. With the paragard you will still get your period each month, which is a relief for some women, cus that way they know they aren't pregnant. You can keep the paragard in for up to 10 yrs instead of the 5 with the mirena. I have the paragard and have had no side effects at all. But then again, some women do experience side effects. I don't know if you can have emotional problems with the paragard, but I would think not since it's not hormonal at all. There have been other side effects reported though such as brittle hair and back pain. I had the back pain for probably a week or so after having it put in, but then it went away. Haven't had a problem since. It can also make your periods heavier than usual. Look it up online, they have a website with more info. Just type "paragard" into google and it should bring up the site.

If you're super great at it, charting is one other option that doesn't require hormones, but you have to be meticulous about it! You can't mess up, and DTD during your fertile times... or forget to chart for a few days.

Good luck! I've heard really awful things about the paraguard in regard to the bleeding, major problems etc....so I got the mirena, which I just had removed because of the mood things and constantly feeling pregnant.

I'm going to try and go back to charting. I'm also looking into this thing called LadyComp. It's expensive upfront, but very comparable to the mirena or paraguard.

FWIW, I've had a great experience with my paragard. Had it 4 months or so, which are supposed to be the hardest to get used to. Good luck!

Love my Paragaurd. I've had it for 1 1/2 years for far.

I just got my paraguard in today::: It hurt, but way less than i expected. I have not really had much cramping. I expect my periods to be heavier for a few months, and that is about it for side affects. I am not interested in hormonal contraceptives, for the moodiness reason! (among others)

I've had lifelong recurring depression. I was on the pill briefly in college and it seemed to trigger a depressive episode, so I didn't want to try any kind of hormonal birth control methods again. I opted for the Paraguard over the Mirena. I've had it for about 5 months, with no mood problems. I get occasional cramping, but that's about it for side effects. Overall I'm happy with it. Can't say anything about heavier periods with it in, since I've only menstruated twice since having it put it (still breastfeeding a lot).

I have a Paragard and I'm very happy with it. My period is heavier but no more crampy than before. I like that it is very, very effective but also reversible. The only other thing I would mention is that you mention that you have a baby, and I'm not sure how old your baby is, but have you considered that it might be post partum depression more so than the Mirena? I know it has hormones in it, but the dose is fairly low. It might just be something to look into, in case getting the IUD out does not improve your symptoms.

There are also other non-hormonal options. If you are charting and your boyfriend uses condoms on your fertile days, or you use a diaphragm or cervical cap, you'd have fairly reliable birth control.

I had mirena for 5 years, and just had it removed feb. 16th. I breastfeed w/ no problem while on mirena, and had a great experience with it. In fact my periods were sp light that i spotted for 1-3 days. HOwever there was a string felt, but it didn't bother my husband. I now have the paraguard. I have been bleeding quite heavy since, and have cramps that feel like contractions. My problem is I herd that this might happen, but the pain is rediculous. Am I just so used to not feeling anything for 5 year to the exact oppisite so suddenly, that it may just feel more dramatic to me? Is what i'm experiencing normal at all?
