circular needles - has anyone tried this?

have recently started doing more knitting on circular needles. am starting to accumulate a stash and came across an interchangeable circular needle kit, like this one...

http://www.discountyarnsale.com/pd_boye.cfm

was thinking this would be way less expensive than buying individual ones (but something tells me they're probably not as reliable or of comparable quality).

just wondering if anyone uses them and what they think of them.

TIA

I have that kit. If you are going to spring for interchangables go with a different brand. I got mine for free even. The cables on the Boye set are awful! Too stiff and the joins aren't that great...yarn catches on them often (at least for me). They also are pretty limited in their cable lengths. I think the Denise and Knit Picks sets have shorter length options.

thanks. i figured as much. only wanted to go with the boye set because they carry them at joann and i have a 40% off coupon.

does anyone here use the denise or knit picks?

I have two sets of the KnitPicks Harmony Wood interchangeables and I love them. I cannot say enough good things about them. I have had a cable give out, but cables are cheap to replace.

I'd go with the knitpicks set honestly. I have their Harmony sock needle set and it rocks. Customer service is awesome too.

I have the Knitpicks Options set and LOVE it! A good friend of mine has the Denise set and loves it too.
I think either would be a good choice

I have the Boyes and a couple individual needles from the Knitpicks set. The only good thing about the Boyes set was the price... I got them for about $17. Other than that I hate them. The yarn ALWAYS gets caught as I try to shift the work around the circle, the cables aren't flexible enough to ML, and I cannot knit on the short circ cable - it's about an inch too short to be useable the way it's made. Oh, and the larger needles are so stubby that my fingers ache after just a few minutes of knitting with them.

I LOVE the knitpicks though. I *really* want the full set. But, it's pricey. So for now I make do with the Boyes and the 2 needles I have in the Knitpicks.

Another vote for the Knitpicks. They also do a mini set (or at least, Get Knitted do) with just 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0mm needles in and a cable or two. If you don't knit in fingering or DK often, you probably won't need anything smaller and you can add the other sizes one at a time as you need them and spread the cost that way.

I love Addis so I'm trying to come up with a way to get this:

I love Addi's too but they are overpriced so I bought some KnitPicks and wow! I like them even better (sharper tip) and they are sooooo much more reasonable. I can't wait to get the set.

love my knit picks options. best purchase ever.

If you do a lot of smaller items, like baby hats, sweater sleeves or soakers, you'll have to either learn to use magic loop or buy fixed diameter circulars. The interchangable sets don't come in a 16" or 12" length (which was a bummer for me). And you'll still needs DPNs. The other draw back is that most sets don't come smaller than a size 4 needle, if you do a lot of very fine gauge work that could be a problem.

Other than that, love the interchangables.

I have 3 sets of interchangeable needles. I have Boyes, KP Harmonies and Denise. I like them all for different reasons. I don't magic loop and I'm not a speedy knitter so I guess the cable on the Boye doesn't bother me. The price is very nice too. I like the Harmonies, but I've had a couple issues w/the metal cups coming unglued from the tip which I've never had w/my Boye or Denise. KP has good CS so they replaced them. I also have Denise. I would say that if you magic loop these would be the hardest to do it with because the cables are the thickest IMHO. I do like them though and got mine for about 50% off retail by buying from someone on Rav.
My advice is see if you can test them and see which "you" like best. I know people rave about KP, but I just think they're ok...I mean the price is right, but other than that I don't like them any better than any of my other needles. I see this question asked all the time on Rav and I have come to realize that what's the best for you can't be answered by anyone else and what people like best is very individualized.

knitpicks options. :

I have a set of Denises- they work just fine for me. To round out my set I have a pair of Addis, a pair of kp options, a pair of bamboo, and a few other random needles. For the projects that I do though- I think the options would have been a better buy.

btw- I make my denises do ml. It isn't nearly as nice as my addis or options- but I some how make it work.

Going to agree with others here who have said not to get the Boye set. I bought mine from Michael's for the same reason (40% off coupon), and while it was fine at the time, I really hate them now. I've already had two of the joins break on me, and I'm not at all rough with them. Plus the tips aren't the sharpest and the cables are far too stiff.

The idea of an interchangeable set is awesome, though. Definitely going to pick up a KnitPicks set when I feel like spending the money!

thanks for all the suggestions ladies (and for confirming that boye is NOT the way to go).

Exactly this! I love the KP Harmony Wood! And they're pretty too!
