Dress Form Recommendations

Can anyone recommend a good dress form. I like to shop at Joanns, but the online reviews of their forms are horrible. So I though it might be a good idea to get some recommendations here. I do like the price point of Joanns, and am new to sewing, so top quality isn't a priority, but I don't want to waste my money either. I am currently making my own clothes, so I think this would be a good investment considering I LOVE sewing now, and getting a dress form is the next big equipment step for me. I'm not looking for top of the line, but if you've had good luck with the cheaper ones, or bad luck with them I'd like to know your opinion. Tell me what you think.

I was in the market for one for awhile to and after asking lots of questions and doing research. I ended up with this one. http://www.fabulousfit.com/
Apparently they use it on Project Runway and the one I have is essentially like a professional form minus the arms and legs. I'm very pleased with my purchase and even better I got it off Craigslist for 66% less, woohoo!

The adjustable ones are worthless, IMHO. I used an old Wolform for years but they are hard to find used and expensive brand new. This place sell some decent looking ones-

My friend and I were just talking about this. She heard of a DIY method for a dress form - wear an old, long teeshirt, then wrap your teeshirt clad body in duct tape. Cut off, stuff, and voila! A dress form on the cheap

There's a tutorial online for a Duct Tape dummy.

Well, they're not perfect, but if you'll be sewing for others or your weight fluctuates (like my sisters does), the ones at Joanns suffice.

I had eleven bridesmaids, four junior bridesmaids, and four flower girls for my wedding. My mom and I made all the dresses, and most of the bridesmaids were far away in town or very out of town, and so either could NOT make fittings at all, or only very seldom. We had to buy three forms but got them on super duper sale and so it wasn't that expensive and for what we were able to make the otherwise $1100 coutour dresses ($75 per dress), the cost was worth it divided by 20 people (mom made my dress and I was working two jobs).

For the very out of town people I contacted 1) a friend in the area who I trust implicitly when it comes to sewing and measurements and they sent me to people who could take them properly in their area if they couldn't do it themselves. 2) the costume shop head in the local university so that they could do the measurements (they know how to do measurements!) for money.

Then we adjusted the dress forms accordingly. We didn't have any issues at all. They weren't, as I said, perfect, but they really did meet the need!

So, if it's for you and you stay the same size forever, do spend the money on the good one. It'll last forever! But...if you will conceivably use them for others as well, or if you change sizes/shape frequently, it's my vote that the adjustable ones can be useful, though not as high quality.

Thanks ladies. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do. I do like the fabulous fit dress forms, and I like how you can customize them but they are kind of out of my price range right now. The duct tape dress form looks interesting as well.

I thought I'd share this. I just finished customizing my fabulous fit dress form. It wasn't too hard and it does look like my figure (for better or worst ).
You can check out my handy work on my blog. I used the pads that came with it, some batting and old cloth diapers. I can't wait to make something for myself and dress her up.
