Squash Vine Borers

Well SVB season will be here soon, ack!

What ways do you try to prevent the SVB from devouring your squash plants?

I'm going to try companion planting with radishes this year and possibly floating row covers. Any other tried and true ideas for thwarting these little nasties...

mint leaves. From potted mint so it won't take over your garden. Rip off leaves and spread it between the rows of squash. Refresh as needed.

The borers have already been at my pumpkins. : I'll try the mint; thanks for the tip, homewithtwinsmama!

Yeah, try the radishes. I put a radish at the base of all my melons, cucumbers, and squash. Don't worry about butternut squash or gourds though, they don't bother them.

I've read that marigold, oregano, and nasturtium repel squash bugs. I'm planting nasturtium in my zucchini planters this year! Borers got my zukes last 2 times I tried to grow them. Grrrrr.
