Will I be happy with these prefolds and wraps?

I spent a while educating myself on greenmountaindiapers, then discovered that they don't ship to Canada and recommend www.parentingbynature.com for us instead.

Parentingbynature doesn't have newborn-size prefolds, so we'd start with infant prefolds. I learned on GMD that Bummis Original size small, and Thirsties XS both accommodate an infant-sized prefold, while still fitting an average-sized newborn well.

So I was thinking of getting:

36 organic infant prefolds...do these look high quality?
2-3 Bummis original size small wraps
3-4 Thirsties XS wraps (for 6 covers total)
2 jamtots wetbags
a snappi? (I was thinking of trifolding and laying the dipes in the wraps)

Their return policy is 14 days on unwashed/unused items. I want to get the stash before baby is here (dd was 15 days late, so who knows when this baby will be here!) and wash more than just one diaper/one cover to try out! So I do want to be pretty sure about what I'm getting, since accommodating for the return policy won't be practical!

Does this look like a NB stash I'd be happy with? My dd was 8 lbs even at birth, so I'm expecting a 8-9 pounder this time around.

TIA! :

I think that looks great. I'd get maybe a couple more snappis. I don't lay diapers in covers w/o a snappi because I can't imagine that it would hold poop in. Using the jelly roll with a snappi is our best bet for holding runny poop. The organic prefolds look nice!

I can't speak to all aspects of your stash...but here's my experience:

Infant prefolds didn't really fit my newborn very well (granted, he was on the small size - 6 lb 5 oz at birth). We used Thirsties covers and Prowrap covers in the beginning. The infant prefolds do fit these covers, but when the umbilical stump is still on (and before the belly button heals up after the stump falls off), you need to put the diaper on so it's very low-riding. Folding over the prefold to make it short enough resulted in a lot of bulk in the front of the diaper, and it was hard to get a good "seal" because of all the bulk...so we had a lot of leaks. I bought a dozen of the newborn size prefolds from Green Mountain, and those were easier to use (but he grew out of them within the first month). To use our infant size prefolds during that time, we turned them sideways (so the thick center part was perpendicular to his body instead of parallel to it), and did the tri-fold that way. This made them the perfect length in the beginning.

I haven't tried Bummis covers, but we've been really happy with the Thirsties (not so crazy about the Prowraps). He's over 11 lbs now, and the xs covers still fit great. We also have a couple of small size covers, and they fit pretty well even when he was a couple of pounds under the weight range for that size. I expect the xs will fit him beyond the 12 pound "limit" the company claims. So, you'll get a lot of use out of your xs Thirsties!

I have 2 snappis around. I rarely use them, but they're handy to have for the occasional time you want to go coverless for a bit to get more air on the butt...I'll also sometimes go coverless for a little while if I'm about to give him a bath anyway and just want to avoid a mess for a few minutes in the meantime.

Hope that helps.

I second that you should be fine with the XS Thirsties wraps for a while. I know we used our XS for quite a long time, probably until DD was more like 13-14 pounds. DD's 16 pounds now and the Small still fits perfectly.

I also have a snappi, but never used it. I just lay the trifold into the wrap and it seems to contain everything just fine. We have many, many fewer blowouts in cloth than we do in disposables (which we use at night and for traveling).

Looks good --

I would skip the XS and just get the small size. Bummies are great covers. Many, many babies have used ours and they still work great. I'd probably get 4 or 5 small covers. And a few more snappis. Lots of people just lay them in, but for us, poop got on the wrap and I didn't like having to change that every time. It also makes the diaper fit a little differently, and I think it looks more comfortable to have the diaper folded on with a prefold. You'll have to experiement.

They do sell a snappi 3-pack, so I will get that!

Sounds good! I was thinking of getting 2 bummis and 4 thirsties.

DD was in disposables, and pretty much every poop was a blowout. I'll be happy if the cover keeps the poop off baby's clothes!

Do you mean to not get thirsties and just get the bummis? I think I'd really like to have a bit of variety, to see how I like each brand. I already have some BSWW smalls, and will probably get some small superbrites too, so I'll have lots of bummis after the newborn stage!

If you're still looking for tiny prefolds in canada, check out http://www.nhdcanada.com/diapering-r...cf8ccadc092bb4

They are also a bit cheaper i think, and organic standards. We started with their infants, but they were pretty big for a couple months. If i was doing it again i'd get some smaller ones too.

I have lots of bummis original (or maybe they're sww's the tag are so faded I can't read them) covers and a few bummis super brite and thirsties. The thirsties are my favorite followed by the super brites then the original bummis. I like them all though I prefer covers with the leg gussets.

Do get more than one snappi. I hate just laying the prefolds in the cover. Snappi-ing or pinning we had fewer then 10 poo blowouts ever.

I love my Bummis Super Snap Wraps immoderately. I totally recommend them.

Anyway, all I have to add here is that I would always want at least 8 covers. Granted, that's partly because I don't launder every day or always even every other (often it's every 3rd day), but really, do you want to be cutting it close on covers when you're sleep-deprived and dealing with a newborn? Sooooooo worth the extra $20 to get a couple of extras. Even if you just throw in a couple of the cheapo Bummis pull-on covers or something, I would get a couple more. (I sew, so it's easy for me to say "more," since I'm only paying for fabric...but really, it makes a huge difference in those early days, in my experience.)

p.s. my son was 9 lb 6 oz at birth and I still really liked having a few newborn-sized (i.e. tiny) diapers to put on him. During the day he wore some bigger ones that were too large for the first week or two (until he got more chub), but well-fitting covers at night were priceless.

I think your list looks good. At almost 11 mos and nearly 18#, our infant pf's still fit dd. So, they've been a great investment.

I would definitely get a few Snappis. I think our dd might be a super-pooper, but Snappis and a nice snug jelly roll was the only thing that prevented blowouts.

We used Prowraps for the first month or so, mixed in with XS Thirsties and then moved to just the Thirsties. The XS lasted us for quite a long time -- great size range. I think we had 6 covers, too and that amount worked well for us.

Best of luck with your stash!

So, do the snappis keep the poo from coming OUT of the cover, or do they help keep the poo from getting on the inside of the cover? I'm not having any problems with poo getting OUT of my Thirsties covers, but it would be great if I could minimize the number of times the poo gets on the inside of the leg gusset.

Right, I would skip the Thirsties. I've never used them, though, so maybe they are awesome. The BSWW are awesome, but the superbrites, weren't so great, imo. The fabric is thinner, so it kind of bent at the velcro part, which dug into DS's tummy. The BSWW are sturdier.

Absolutely. They keep the poo off of the cover so you can re-use it without washing every time.

Thanks again for all your replies everyone! I'm feeling a lot more confident about my selection.

So, for budgetary reasons, I think I will stick with the 36 infant prefolds, and 6 covers. I will get the snappi 3-pack too.

Are these wetbags good ones? And I should get 2, right? One extra for when the other is in the wash?

I'm so excited about : Only half a year to wait for the baby to get here! I wonder how many months I will be able to hold out before ordering the stash? I did sign up for their newsletter, so hopefully they have some sales/coupons sometime. :

We have these ones: http://www.thestorkwearhouse.com/Bum...p/bum-tote.htm

We have one medium (for long day trips), two smalls for the diaper bag, and one x-large one for the diaper pail. I think those look nice, but it seems like the zipper might get in the way if you have a diaper that you just swished in the toilet, kwim? We have a plastic diaper pail with a lid, so the wet bag just lines that pail. It is easy to open the lid and chuck the diaper in. I think it is better to have a somewhat open pail, too, it actually helps with the smell.

Hm...I guess I better work on figuring out how to use the snappis "properly". I've only used them a few times. I end up with a gap between the part of the diaper that's in the front and the part of the diaper that wraps around from the back. Is this normal? The teeth of the snappi don't seem deep enough to grab both layers of the diaper, so they're only hooked into the part coming around from the back. Am I doing something wrong?

(sorry to hijack the original post with my own quesitons)

What kind of fold are you using? How big is your baby? How big are your dipes? Maybe they're too small?

This is the fold we use -- the newspaper fold: http://www.softclothbunz.com/Cloth-d..._ep_111-1.html

You should not have a gap at the thighs. The snappi only has to grab the top layer of each side.

He's just over 11 lbs - 6 weeks old, and we're using infant size prefolds. I'm doing the same fold as in your link. I don't get quite as much overlap at the hip as in those pictures, but I can overlap the sides and front a bit. My issue is that the front part of the diaper tends to start slipping down so I get a gap (he's a squirmer). I've got a snappi on him now, and so far so good - maybe I just haven't been pulling down hard enough on the bottom part of the Y-shape of the snappi (so the front part was moving too much).

Thanks for the pictures, though. That helped.
