Remember to have absolutely no lights in your room, or coming in your windows, for optimum melatonin production and adrenal healing...!

Oh yes, lack of sleep seriously contributes to my migraines! Uhg. I hope you're feeling better.

I'm in. I haven't really had healthy sleep habits ever since I got hooked on late-night radio when I was in high school. And that was a loooong time ago. :

These days, I'm very pregnant and seriously in need of building up a "sleep cushion" ASAP, so I'm going to aim for 9:30.

And no artificial lights from computers and tvs helps too. The article said none after 8pm!!

And a spoonful of honey.

Went to bed at 10:30, but my 2 and 4 yo kept coming in to sleep with us (they sleep together). It was NOT a restful night trying to sleep with my head wedged between a 2 yo and the wall . . . but still better than having that AND going to bed later!!!!!

great thread! thanks pat for the inspiration!!!

Alright- very big bennefit of going to bed at 10 pm last night- when my ds woke me up at 4:25am and then I didn't get back to sleep, well hey- at least I had a solid 6 hours sleep already! It's been pretty recent that he'll sleep without waking until then so I actually woke at 4am just because my body is used to waking in the night. Six staight hours feels pretty good

Pat- I don't do the honey because I worry about it dipping my blood sugar too low and waking me up (hypoglycemic) any thoughts on that? It doesn't seem like a good idea for me is my thought.

Also good for sleep- get a little excersize in the morning (even just 10 minutes) It will raise your cortisol levels (which is good for the beginning of the day) then the level should taper out as the day goes on. My ND reccomends doing a little relaxing excersize in the evening, like stetching or gentle yoga.

I think I go to sleep faster if I get off the computer an hour or so before bed too. Other wise my mind is spinning.

Here is The Hibernation Diet thread about the benefits of honey. http://www.mothering.com/discussions...=honey+bedtime

Here is an old post of mine about honey.

Apparently, honey is different because of the fructose, in addition to glucose. Fructose is stored in the liver for future needs of blood sugar regulation. The glucose formed from the fructose is stored in the liver and released only if and when blood glucose falls. AND "The Fructose Paradox" allows for glucose uptake into the liver and therefore prevents a rapid rise in blood glucose.

The first and third links talk about the melatonin connection also. Also related to growth hormone production.
http://www.apitherapy.org/pdfs/Websi...HoneyFood2.pdf
http://www.isoactive.com/hd/honey.htm
http://www.prohoneyandhealth.com/Use...20Cycle-FL.pdf

From the second article:

Quote:
Any fall in blood glucose is dangerous for the brain. Even a minor fall in blood glucose will cause the brain to panic. This will cause the adrenal glands to be activated, to go into hyper drive and the adrenal hormones are, if overproduced toxic to human biology.
The hormones are of course essential for the type of crisis mentioned but these hormones (stress hormones) make us sick if we produce them chronically.

Chronic overproduction of the adrenal glands is the condition of modern man and will lead to conditions such as heart disease, osteoporosis, obesity, diabetes (non insulin dependent), poor immune function, depression and other distressing conditions with which we are all familiar.

If we can look after our liver glycogen store, by including in our diet the correct balance of carbohydrates so that both the liver and therefore the brain are catered for at all times of the day and night we reduce the requirement for production of the adrenal hormones, and we can then reserve our adrenal glands for their correct function which is for fight or flight.

How do we do this?

By stabilizing blood glucose.

How do we do this?

By looking after our liver glycogen store in the way that nature intended, by using natural fructose from fruit, dried fruit, fruit juice and the other natural source, honey.
And, there's more! Honey contains small amounts of a wide array of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants (and probiotics). The vitamins found in honey may include (depending on floral variety) niacin, thiamin, riboflavin and pantothenic acid; minerals present include calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium and zinc.
http://www.foodreference.com/html/art-honey-health.html

"recommend not more than 10 teaspoons of honey (which is about 50ml)"

Different varietals of honey possess a large amount of friendly bacteria (6 species of lactobacilli and 4 species of bifidobacteria)
, which may explain many of the "mysterious therapeutic properties of honey."
http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?t...dspice&dbid=96
http://www.prohoneyandhealth.com/Use...m%20Report.pdf

Clinical studies have shown that honey enhances the growth of healthful bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. The effect of honey was similar to that of commercial FOS, GOS and inulin. Sweeteners other than honey did not appear to have an effect on stimulating bifidobacteria growth.

1. Honey can enhance the growth of acid production of human Bifidobacterium ss. Journal of Food Protection. 2002; 65(1); 214-8
2. Honey enhances the production of lactic acid from Bifidobacteria, Journal of Food Science, 2001;66(3): 478-481

I'm rather fond of raw, local honey. : Just be sure they don't give antibiotics, or feed HFCS to their bees!! ASK!

Ate protein by 10am. But, boy am I crashing this afternoon. Did you all know that if you stay up until 1:15am and get up at 8-something am, it isn't enough sleep?

Thanks for the honey info Pat! I tried wading through the honey hibernation thread once, but got bogged down. The links you posted here are very helpful. Next year dh really wants to get bees- it'll be fun to show him this

I hope you're in bed now!

Not sure if you found your answer yet, but I've taken melatonin for years on and off, and did when preg with my third baby. Then I looked it up online and found studies showing it caused sexual immaturity in offspring rats. Now I don't recall the dose or the site, and I'm not saying anything concrete. But I chose to stop taking it for the rest of my preg.

It's 9:56 Pacific! Gotta brush my teeth . . .
