signing online guestbooks???

A person from an online group I visit recently passed away, someone provided the link to the funeral home and it has a guestbook online that you can sign/post a message there. Is it generally acceptable for internet friends/strangers to leave messages on something like that or is it designed more for friends IRL and family?

I would say it's the perfect venue for internet friends and strangers to give their condolences. When my brother died, the paper had one of these for his obituary, and it was nice to see how big the guestbook grew. No matter what venue, you're going to get lots of people paying their respects that the family never knew, and that's actually a comfort----that your loved one touched so many lives and that those people will keep their memory alive as well.

The paper that published my Mom's obituary had online guest books for people to sign. Before the end of the month when it is deleted I went and copied the messages. I didn't know who half the people were, but those messages meant the world to me.

I feel that the online guest books are meant for anybody who would like to express their condolences. It doesn't matter the relationship between you and the one who passed.

Thanks for your responses, I did go ahead and sign the guestbook. I'm glad others are saying yes sign the guestbook and I didn't make a social oops.

I'm sure there are many many people out there that this person touched their lives, I know they did mine and their family will never know unless we all say so.

Thanks mamas!
