I think my OB dislodged my mucus plug! Will this speed labor? Can I still DTD?

I'm 38.5 weeks today and my OB just did a mildly painful internal on me. She discovered that my cervix is softening, but not yet dilated. When she removed her hand, there was blood-tinged mucus (sorry if TMI!) which continued to flow for a while after I left. Did she dislodge my mucus plug? If so, is that going to speed up the labor process? I wouldn't mind if it did, to be honest, as I'm due to be induced in a week if I don't go on my own due to PIH.

Also, I'm working on doing some "home based" induction methods, and DH and I were planning on DTD a lot in the upcoming days. Is that still safe if I no longer have a mucus plug, or am I risking infection?

Thanks!

birth can occur even a month after mucous plug comes out, or so I was told by my doula. You shouldn't put anything in the vagina after your water breaks, so you should be fine.

Your mucus plug can regenerate. You're good until your water breaks, so have fun!

A bit of bleeding is normal with an internal depending on how sensitive you are. My dr said as long as it's not so much you'll need a pad, you're fine. ;0

Thanks for the reply! I actually did need a pad after the exam and it was mucus-y (I'm sorry - gross, I know), so I think that really may have been the plug. Today I'm a tiny bit crampy, but it didn't seem to do much else. Oh well. One week to go and just about 39 weeks along. Maybe something will start on it's own this week. Here's to hoping!

LOL Want to race? I'm due on Tuesday..lol

Actually I'll let you ditch me in line, I have an ear infection and am hoping that heals before I go into labor..

There is no such thing as a mucous plug as most people perceive it. There is no "cork" in the cervix that has to come out before the baby is born. What is commonly called the muous plug is just a blob of mucous and blood that is generated as the cervix gets ready to start dilating. Ladies can "pass their mucous plug" several times before they go into active labor or not pass it at all. When your doctor did the exam he stretched your cervix some and probably stripped your membranes which produced the blood and mucous.

I also think it sounds like she stripped your membranes. My mw tried stripping my membranes at 41 weeks; it didn't work too well because I wasn't dilated. But it hurt a fair bit, and enough blood/mucus was coming out afterwards that I did need a pad.
