Cloth Diapers...Good! What about WIPES???? - Page 2

I use flannel/velour or velour/sherpa wipes. Like these:

I just wet them with water. You can definitely use disposable wipes and wash them before throwing them away. the reason for that is that you probably don't have a good place to just throw them away, you tuck them in the diaper anyway, so when I used them I just grabbed them out of the clean laundry and tossed them.

DDC crashing from new posts.

-I used old flat cloth diapers. They're basically t-shirt material, so I just folded in half, cut. Fold again, cut. Rinse, repeat until I have a bunch of smaller cloths. They don't fray and last a long time.
-In regards to solution, I didn't use any. I used plain water. I had used disposable wipes on my first dd only to have her develop horrible diaper rash. Anytime I used anything other than water (including soap) she would start to get a rash. I skipped all that with dd2 and she hasn't had a diaper rash yet. (17 months old)
As it is, you don't want to use soap in the genital area. It can irritate the skin quite a bit, not to mention increase the chance of infections.
-I kept the cloths with the diapers and changed the diaper in the bathroom. Usually need to clean the diaper anyway. Diapers and cloths went into a pail.
-I carried a plastic bag to put dirty cloths and diapers in when travelling. You can also get wet bags for this (or make them)
-I had quite a few cloths, around 50. It was too much. I ended up dividing them in half and using the unused ones for cleaning. Works great! They are nice and soft and I don't need to buy paper towel at all.

Good luck and congratulations all! :

We use the Kissaluv Terry wipes. I love them. I got about 4 dozen when I was pregnant with DD and recently bought another 2 dozen to add to the stash on the expectation of 2 in diapers. I'd recommend about a dozen more than you're doing diapers.

I used to put a wipe solution in a spray bottle and spray each one before use. Recently I bought a shoe box size rubbermaid container at Target for $2, and I pour the wipe solution over them instead - which is so much easier IMO. I just put a few in a plastic zipper bag when I'm out and about. I use them to wipe my DD's face and hands too. If they get really full of poop we'll spray it off just like we do the diapers (but you don't have to worry about that at all until your little one starts solids - exclusively BF baby poop is easily water soluable).

In our wipe solution I use: water, aloe juice, and Burt's Bees Apricot Oil. I'm not scientific at all... maybe 1 teaspoon of oil, and 1/2 cup-ish of aloe, then fill the bottle with warm tap water and shake. I just pour what feels right. I add water if the solution doesn't cover the wipes as much as I'd like. I've never had issues with mildew or smell at all. I've tried TTO and/or lavendar oil a couple of times (just a drop or two), but DD's pretty sensitive to it, so I quit trying.

there is a lot of good advice here I'll just add that I really really love cloth wipes. The few times we traveled w/ ds and used disposable it completely irritated me. My favorite wipes were the Thirsties bamboo but we used receiving blankets ect. I kept them in the wipe warmer w/ water and tea tree oil.

: YEAH! : YEAH! : YEAH!

Thank you all so much for the great advice. I feel much better about making my own cloth wipes. I'm off to JoAnn Fabrics to find some terry cloth and flannel.....hopefully I can find some in the clearance area! They do have solid flannel for $2 a yard this weekend (normally $4.99).

Thanks again.

there's a lot of good advice here......I just cut up old sweatshirts. I used a favorite washcloth as a template and just cut it up (and old sweatpants) 1 sweatshirt and a pair of sweatpants made a ton. That way, one side was fleece and the other side not fleece, so they were relatively absorbent and I loved the fleece side for their little tooshies when they had diaper rash. It just felt soft and gentle. I also made some out of old t-shirts which I never used. I always use the fleece. They are good for faces too....I just tossed them in the diaper pail. The chunky poo (after solids) I would use sposies on..

I think I will try some of your awesome ideas for solutions and maybe that wipe warmer!!

if you do use an old container for your wipes, you have to use distilled water, right? or else use plain water and wash it out every day? (because it will get gross, I think...is this true?) What about if you use witch hazel in lieu of distilled water-- can they wipes sit for longer in the witch hazel? (or is this just too expensive in the long run?)

I use plain water (well I use the filter on our faucet) mixed about half with witch hazel and keep them in a wipes warmer. They keep a while. I haven't had them go sour or mildew yet.

I prefer baby washcloths for wipes, but I also like the flannel ones I made (just turned and top stitched) I made some that are flannel on one side and terry (cut up an old towel) on the other, but think those are too bulky.

Do you use purchased cloth wipes? (seems expensive)

$.75 cents each for cotton washcloths at Target. Could buy bamboo ones but too expensive.

-Make your own cloth wipes? How?

Could you tear old towels up? It's not like they have to be hemmed or even or anything.

-What solution do you use?

Water.

-How do you keep them moist?

I don't, I just have a bottle of water with me when I go out and use the tap water at home.

-What do you do when they are really full of poop? Do they just go in the diaper pail with the CDs? Or do you rinse them out in the toilet?

They don't get THAT poopy because I'm not going to scoop poop with them, but regardless, all cloth wipes go in with the diapers.

-Do you use disposable wipes? I've heard you can just throw them in the diaper pail with the CDs, wash em and reuse em.

Might work to hang-dry but I wouldn't put an item that might have flammables in the dryer.

-Cloth wipes- How many do you need?

I had 30, about five more than I had diapers, and it works.
