Washer problems (long sorry)

Ok I posted this over in mindful home management but I had no responses and I furgured since it happend to me while I was stripping diapers maybe you have had the same problem.

I bought a used washer about 2 weeks ago. I havent been using my cloth diapers due to them needing to be stripped and I was still catching up to the laundry from the previous washer being broken.

I started stripping them by boiling water and pouring into the washing machine then filling it up with the Hot wash setting. I added dawn and then my diapers.

I let them run through and did an extra cold rinse cycle. When they were finished I pulled them out to hang outside and I noticed they had this dirt spots on them that looked like they had fell in dirt. When I went to wipe it off the dipes It smeared. It was grease. So I looked inside the washer and realized that there was this grease stuff all inside the drum. So I just did a Hot/Cold cycle with nothing in there and it all went away. So.....

Is it from using the boiling water and it loosened this stuff up then the cold rinse made it adhere to the diapers??
And also What is this stuff?

Btw I rewashed and got it off my dipes I just would like to know what happend so I dont do this agian.

I don't know. I've never had that happen to me. You mentioned it was used. Maybe the people who used it before washed some really grimey stuff. Glad to hear your diapers washed clean.

greasers? When we lived in utah - we lived in oil country and the laundromats had washers for greasers (oil workers) and non greasers. The washers got gross

No oil around here really but who knows were the washer came from. lol I bought it from a used appliance store. Oh I have been googling how to clean one but nothing I have seen looks like it will deep clean one.

Personally, the only thing I could think of doing would be like weekly washes with a cup or more of baking soda for awhile, maybe scrub it all over with the BS beforehand also.

It might have actually been the Dawn that brought out the grease?
