Fries, James F./ Vickery, Donald. M: Take care of yourself. Da Capo, 9th Edition, 2009.
I have several books and always read what they say about vaccines. Like the pediatrics books from the 80ies that say that pertussis is only for at risk families, HiB only needs 2 shots to work, chickenpox, mumps and rubella are benign etc. I like to compare that info to what peds say nowadays.
Anyways, we just moved to a new base and DH got a book from the medical clinic. I skipped right away to the vaccine page and found surprising information (page 26):
1) "Don't allow yourself to be reinoculated just because you've lost records of previous immunizations."
Hmm funny, I hear from so many doctors that overvaccinating won't hurt... I think they know well that every shot is a risk, which is way they tell you not to get too many shots here.
2) "In general, don't seek out the optional immunizations. Flu shots, for example, are only partially effective and often cause a degree of fever and aching; they're generally recommended only for those over 65 and for those with sever major diseases."
Yet they push flu shots on infants as young as 6 months! Plus, they discourage optional shots, once again because I think they know that it is risky and unnecessary.
Really awkward though that the military makes my DH get a flu shot every year.
