"Someone Knows My Name" / "The Book of Negroes"

Has anyone read this book?

It is published as Someone Knows My Name in the USA and Australia, and The Book of Negroes in Canada - the author is Canadian, as am I, and so the one I read had the former title (I was pretty surprised that they changed it - c'est la vie).

It is a stunning book! I received it on Sunday and finished it on Tuesday. Every free moment I had went to this book - which is saying a lot with a 15 month old running around. The protagonist is an amazing, strong, sensational woman born in Africa and stolen from her home and family to be sold into the slave trade. It follows her to the end of her life, over 3 continents and countless struggles. It is truly the kind of book that stays with you and makes you stronger.

I can't say enough about it! I love history, I am somewhat of a history buff, but I found myself learning so much.

I'm going to put it on my book list. I recently finished reading " Push" by Sapphire. I couldn't put it down, but all the while it tore out my heart. They are making a movie about it staring Monique.

I also thought it was a fabulous book! It had me crying on the subway at the end!

I should be getting this book this week from the library. It will be the last of CBC Canada Reads 2009 books for me to finish. If you can believe, my local library in Ontario did not have it, so I had to wait until after I moved to Indiana to get it from the library here! I'm really looking forward to it!

Great, powerful book.

I was vacationing in Hilton Head Island, SC as I read it.
Pretty powerful to in that area that Aminata is brought to from Africa.

We checked out the museum and learned more about the indigo plantations and the Gullah culture.

I am so surprised at this! He has had several book readings hosted by many local libraries in our region last year. I saw him there last Fall. We had a "one community reads" with tons of the books ordered as well as group book clubs sets and discussion packets.
