what shows to watch?

So now that all of the season finales have come and gone I have nothing to watch. I have a DVR and I am looking for some shows to record, I need suggestions. Can be something new or something I can catch lots of repeats of. We don't have any premium channels, but we do have a somewhat good package with DirectTV. It has been so long since I watched live TV I really don't know what is out there. Help! Shows I like include Lost, Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, Life, the 4400, ER, Private Practice, the Mentalist, Jon and Kate plus 8. Reality shows like Dirty Jobs are good, ones like Dancing with the Stars are not.
Any suggestions?

Leverage on TNT is starting their second season in July. Really like that show.

I might give HawthoRNe a try. It's a new show premiering on TNT this June starring Jada Pinkett Smith.

The second season of Jericho is wrapping up on The CW on Sunday nights.

I'm also considering giving Raising the Bar, again on TNT, a try. Their second season starts this June as well.

Southland is a good new show on ABC I think... (we DVR too ) I bet you can see missed episodes online.

DH and I enjoy a lot of Discovery channel shows like Out Of the Wild: The Alaska Experiment, and Deadliest Catch. TOP CHEF will be back on starting June 11th I believe, Bravo has The Fashion Show (tons of reruns) also they have a lot of Top Chef reruns on right now.

Also Psych on TNT will be back soon, I'm not sure when. That show cracks me up.

I know what you mean - I've stooped to watching "Groomer Has It" on Animal Planet which is pretty pathetic. I second the Top Chef rec - The Masters series comes on Bravo in a few weeks. Also I think the new season of Saving Grace is coming on soon.

Do you have On Demand? I'm totally addicted to watching all the HBO series'. The Ladies Detective Agency is really good - as is True Blood and Entourage (both of which you can catch up on now in time for the season premiers this summer!). If not, you could start renting whole seasons of shows like that from your local library. You might like stuff like Saving Grace, Breaking Bad, Whale Wars, and all the HBO and Showtime series'. I don't get Showtime but I do want to "catch up" on the series' that I've been hearing so much about like Dexter and Weeds - so I guess I'll have to take a trip to my library too. My library even has it's index online so I can "request" the items even if they don't have it in my local library - they'll send it up there and I pick it up when it's in.

I just saw the commercial for Mental and was going to recommend it. I have it set to record on the DVR. Now I just need to tell DH I set it to record so he doesn't think he did it, watches it without me and erases it.

We get a lot of our TV on the internet and on DVD. Shows we love:
The West Wing
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Firefly (really, anything by Joss Whedon)
House
Big Love

usually there are new summer episodes of:

Psych
Burn Notice
Eureka

But I haven't checked to see when/if they are returning.

I also like to watch re-runs of shows I didn't have time for during the year.

We Netflix a ton of shows also.

I'm excited for Weeds to start, I think the first episode is on Monday...on Showtime. Also, following that is a new show with Edie Falco called Nurse Jackie. That looks interesting. I'm right there with you, I'm really missing my new Lost episodes!

I've been watching The Unusuals on ABC, and really like it so far. "Michael" from Lost is on it plus "Joan" from Joan of Arcadia. It started late in the season, so they are still showing new ones.

Also, I know you said you don't like stuff like Dancing with the Stars, but So You Think You Can Dance is a great show IMO. I even heard it touted on NPR last year (so it must be good right? ), but I can't remember on which program. My husband even watches it with me . Anyway, they are finished with the auditions and have chosen the top 20 already, but the main competition won't start till next week and it will air through the summer.

Don't get too attached to The Unusuals, it wasn't picked up for a second season.

DH and I have been getting Dexter (Showtime) off Netflix. We just finished season one. So far so good! It's creepy but really interesting.

I'm looking forward to Leverage, Better Off Ted (they're doing the second half of their season starting later in June), Psych and Monk... and making more use of our Netflix subscription!

It seems like anything even remotely good never gets a chance. Thanks for the heads up.
