Baby John is here

Hi all Just got home from the hospital yesterday. Our DS, John Edward B. III was born Wednesday morning at 11:15am via c-section. Basically, nothing has gone as planned, my totally natural VBAC went out the window because of complications with a sudden increase in my amniotic fluid. He was born at 9 lbs 12 oz, 21 and 1/2 inches long, with a head size of 14 inches. He is quite a solid little baby!

Nursing is not going well since my milk came in. We were doing really well in the hospital, he was nursing like a champ, than when my milk came in yesterday he started freaking out at every feeding, won't or can't latch correctly, etc. Last night was really rough, I'm in a lot of pain from the bad latch and I'm waiting for everyone to get up for the day so I can go rent a hospital grade pump. I just had to give him a bottle of formula since he hadn't eaten in hours. After nursing DD for over 3 years with no problems, this is just not the way I thought things would go.

I also came home yesterday to the news that one of my cats died while I was in the hospital. DD is having trouble adjusting to DS, she hit him in the head yesterday because she was mad that I asked her to not pull on his hair. DP's dad is in the hospital too, he has to have his toe and part of his foot amputated in an emergency situation because of diabetes.

I'm ok about the c-section. The amount of pain I was in over night waiting for the section was unbelievable, it felt like my entire uterus was on fire. I was having mild, but consistent contractions, but the pain was not going away in between them. I'm just thankful we didn't have to have a crash c-section in the middle of the night. DP was able to be in the OR with me, the spinal worked and I felt nothing, but my blood pressure started to drop and they got a little panicky because I started to get a searing pain in my head and to pass out. What ever they did worked, and I recovered quickly.

All in all, not a fun time this week. I'm hoping I'll at least be able to pump for DS. Sorry if any of this is incoherent, I'm exhausted from lack of sleep and recovering from the surgery.

Liz

Congratulations on John's arrival, but I am sorry it didn't turn out the way you'd planned. Hopefully these feeding problems will sort themselves out in the next couple of days and you'll both be able to recover better.

wow, mama to you for all that you are going through this week. Congrats on your big healthy boy!! I hope the nursing issues get resolved. We had similar problems when my milk came in with latch issues. I'm happy to say that at 4 weeks things are going pretty smooth!

Sorry things are rough, congrats about the baby. Hope you can get in to see a good LC soon or even a LLL leader.

Congratulations! Im sorry you are having feeding issues. I had a lot of trouble at first too and I nursed my DD for 2 years with no problems so it was kind of a shock to me too.

I hope things start getting better and you get a chance to rest and recover.

Congratulations and welcome baby John!

I'm so sorry about all the other sad things happening. Please consider calling your local LLL and see if someone will come over and help you ASAP. Good luck.

Thanks all We went and rented a hospital grade pump today, so I'll start pumping and giving it to him in a bottle tonight.

Sadly, there is no LLL here. I'm a trained postpartum doula and tried to start a chapter when we first moved here and lets just say LLL was not helpful in trying to help me get leadership training. There is a lactation consultant in the hospital, she agreed that I need the pump ASAP so we're starting with that.

Anyway, I'll do what I can to keep giving him breast milk for as long as possible, even though it will have to probably be supplemented.

That is exactly what we are doing. Like I said to my best friend this morning, it does not matter how he got here or what he eats, he is healthy and thriving and just a miracle to be around.

maybe try cranial sacral therapy or chiro adjustments for him, might help the latch.
