this one is SO BAD it deserves a response...

This needs letter writing to People and to Abbott labs, makers of Similac....

The ad is a tear out in the new People mag on stands right now. These are quotes directly from the ad itself:

"you'll feed his imagination. we'll feed his immune system. While you protect her on the outside, we'll help protect her on the inside. You'll help her stand on her own 2 feet, we'll help her immune system run.

Similac Advance Early Shield is especially designed to help support your baby's developing immune system. its the only formula that has our exclusive blend of prebiotics, nucleotides, and antioxidants-nutrients naturally found in breastmilk. you brought her this far, WE'll help take her as far as she can go"

So to write People magazine:
editor@people.com

I have been looking for a while and I can't seem to find contact email address for Abbott labs, though I did find a site dedicated to how wonderful their new formula is.....

and if anyone wants to post a form letter that would be much appreciated. I get really cheesed when I write these things, especially for a formula ad that is SO FULL OF LIES!!!!

*Insert strain of swear words here...*

So... if I happen to win the lottery tonight, should we sue for false advertising?

Sucks that they're being so misleading. Sure, they state that they have included special stuff to 'protect' baby's immune system, but that's not the same thing as transferring immunities from mom, which they seem to be implying they can do.

Also the general gist seems to be "Hey, great job BFing for a whole 4 weeks(or some other incredibly-short-to-MDCers amount of time)! *We'll* take it from here."

I don't see anything worse in that than any other formula advertisement. They list the specific ingredients that their formula has that artificial baby milks don't.

And the "stand on her own two feet" part sounds like they're advertising it as a toddler formula, for use after a year of breastfeeding.

perhaps I should have included the imagery they were using for the ad campaign. it is a *newborn baby* held in her father's hands, very small and cute. its hugely manipulative and a huge break in the WHO code claiming *at all* to be immunity boosting when that is such a steaming load of youknowwhat. there is nothing to prove all this extra stuff they are adding to their formula means its absorbed or even even better than the less expensive stuff its sitting next to.
any comparison to breastmilk is also banned.
and this is a 4 page ad.

Sounds horrible.

I would love to write a letter however I think the number of words in my vocabulary would dramatically decrease and my blood pressure would skyrocket...

That's the key, and something we should all be telling anyone who mentions this formula to us. More than likely, the nutrients will not be absorbed properly/appropriately for a human babe, as they are the exact ones nature designed for humans (let's not forget that the dha and ara come from fungi), and they probably are not the appropriate amounts for a human infant.

I was seriously cheesed the day I posted this. (my mom took a picture of me huge and pregnant and writing this post, did I mention I was DONE being pregnant?) and then I went into labour that night and had my baby by morning.

so I haven't written a form letter yet, has any one written them yet? or should I write one while nursing and full of love hormones from breastfeeding?
