Any trainers left in the house?

Both of my dogs are peeing on the couch. The Mastiff is 2 years old, has been doing this since he was a puppy. Every chance he gets to be unsupervised outside of the crate, he lifts his leg on the couch. The yorkie/dach that we rescued last year has never, to my knowledge, peed on the couch before today- walked right up and lifted his leg in a different spot than where the other dog has gone. As it happens, I checked the urine on the little dog last week- we were testing some new strips at the clinic where I work and we used his urine to sample. The Mastiff has been checked numerous times for UTI- always clean.

Honestly, I've never had a dog who continuously marked like this. DH said that they are crated or outdoors, period. And I don't blame him. I'm pg with #4, and I spent over 3 hours today, trying to clean the couch. Have used Natures Miracle and my Hoover carpet cleaner numerous times over the past 2years.

North of 60, if you're still here, SevenVeils, or mesa or anyone else who trains- wth can I do with them? I'm suspecting that the little dog only peed because he smells the urine, but Bodhi goes to that couch and automatically lifts his damn leg without even sniffing (I've seen him across the room and have shouted but couldn't get to him quick enough).

Any ideas? I'm really at the end of my rope. I cannot live here with dog urine in the house and I've done everything the same w/these dogs as any I've ever had and have never ever had this problem before.

Is the dog neutered? If not do so ASAP. Have you considered a belly band? Getting the smell of urine out of a fabric couch is probably next to impossible. I would consider a new couch and block access.

You have two males right? Are they neutered? Are they peeing anywhere else in the house?

If you have two males, neutered or not, and they are peeing in specific areas and peeing where the other peed, it is no great mystery.... They are marking. Neutering may or may not help especially if it an ingrained habit. It would not hurt to neuter and it has the potential to stop the or lessen the marking.

What I would do is not give them a chance to mark on the couch and if for some reason I did catch them I would correct them.

As far as retraining I'd pretend/assume they are untrained and go back to square 1, for a week or two it's crate or outside period. During this time I'd work on getting every bit of smell humanly possible out of the couch.

Then I'd get a 4-6 foot leash and they are only in the house if they are on a leash attatched to me. After a week or two of that it's you are only in the house if you are in the same room, and branch out from there.

Have you looked into any products like these http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc....cfm?c=3307+32

We've been dealing with cat pee so I can relate to the cleaning and smell.

Not a trainer--but--if he were my dog, I would crate and closely supervise first.

Second, I would consider his personality, and if I thought he would take it well, I would hide with the penny can and wait for him to make to mark.

I would also be keeping my eyes open for a new couch.

I totally agree with the PP who said to leash them to you when they aren't crated or outside. You need to treat them as if they aren't housebroken, and if they are peeing in the house, then they aren't. Neutering may or may not help at this point with the mastiff as it's habit now. You may also want to look into having the couch cleaned professionally. If the smell isn't gone completely, they'll go back.

If it is at all possible, the first thing that I would do is to replace the couch and then, with the arrival of the new one, completely rearrange the room so that there is no couch or soft chair or etc in the spot where the pee couch is now.

I forget- is Bodhi 3 now?

Then, this is excellent advice.

Would love to replace the couch, but it's just not feasible right now. I did think about moving the living room furniture around, though, to help break the association.

He's 2 now- actually 26mos. So a big bratty teenager in a beautiful Mastiff's body

Yeah. Ulysses is 23 months old, I hear you totally. For some reason I thought Bodhi was significantly older than Uli. How much does Bodhi weigh now?

I'd say rearrange the room then, and get some kind of cover for the couch if that's possible, at least temporarily. If you can do that, I'd then get some bitter apple or similar and douse the cover with it. If you can change the position, smell and appearance of the couch that might give you good leverage in breaking this habit.

Then, yeah if it seems like it might work, hiding with a penny can to throw, so he gets a good startle the first few times that he thinks about it. Don't wait for the actual stream, the correction or startle should come when he commits to the action, rather than when he acts. But I think you know that.
