Screeching and whining

How do I help an 18 mo learn not to screech and whine NONSTOP for something he wants?
My DS makes a noise much like Jim Carey (Lloyd) in the movie "Dumb & Dumber" ("do you want to hear the most annoying sound in the world? EEEEHHHHHHH"). It is nerve wracking. If that doesnt produce a desired result it quickly becomes a screech and then a scream.

Tonight he was doing it while I was getting dinner on the table. I know, I should have had dinner ready before he was crazy hungry, but my pizza dough took longer than expected. I had given him a little snack while cooking, but I was to the point of plating everything and we were going to be eating in less than 2 minutes. It was a LONG two minutes with the screeching and I responded my snapping at poor DH.

So how do you help teach your toddler polite patience???

I don't know that you can teach a toddler polite patience, it's something that takes some growing up. As for the whining he may tend to do that less if he has more choices.

Good point.
I guess patience is an unreasonable expectation for an 18 mo.
I will just need to try to avoid triggers...for my own sanity...it really is an awful sound!
