I knew my dad wasn't against homebirth ...

My sister (10 yrs older) had two homebirths back in the late 90s. When I first announced my pregnancy with DD, I told my dad we were planning a homebirth. He said he didn't really have anything to say against it, since he was born at home and my sister had had no problems.

Just recently a local newscast aired an interview with some of my friends about homebirth. My family was on camera for a few seconds, so I e-mailed the link to my dad. I didn't figure he'd watch it, except to look for us. I just got this message back from him (quoted with his permission).

Quote:
The thing that negatively impressed me is that the ACOG makes a big deal of opposing home births as though they were a neutral provider of input. In reality, of course, it is thousands of dollars from their pockets every time a home birth takes place.

And what about the negative side … the number of staph infections caught in hospitals, and the like.

I agree. A home birth professional should have some ready contact with a hospital in case something goes wrong, which occasionally it can. But usually it is not so.

Also, what about the fact that for the country with the most expensive healthcare in the world, we are far from the top in having live births live. I don’t know that I said that, but other countries have much lower rates of infant mortality. What does that say about our healthcare system?
I'm so proud of him!
