Could use some reassurance. Water broke 18 hours ago, no real labor.

I'm 39 weeks tomorrow with my 3rd child. At 2 a.m. last night, my water broke (actually, I think leaked... a lot... is more accurate, since it has continued to leak throughout the day.) I had some ctx, but nothing major, and they got fewer and further between until morning. By 9 a.m. they had completely stopped. My m/w came over around noon, and baby and I both checked out with flying colors. Just wait, she said.

Then around 1ish, I had this really bad episode of vomiting and diarrhea. I felt like I was in transition, only I hadn't been having any ctx. My m/w came over and checked on me again. Baby's HB and my BP were both totally fine. We deduced that I likely had become dehydrated, and that seemed to make sense, as the more water I drank, the better I felt. Just in case the problem was an early infection, she told me to take my temperature and pulse every hour. Both have been completely fine throughout the afternoon and evening. (My water has been totally clear, too.)

It's now 10 p.m. and I'm having VERY mild contractions, which are completely NOT organized -- no real pattern at all. They are anywhere from 3-30 minutes apart, so if anything, this is super early labor. The thing is that this is how I was feeling last night after my water leaked, and still nada.

My other labors were pretty fast and relatively easy. This is my first HB and I really want to let go and have the experience... but I am starting to get anxious. I could really use some reassuring words.

When you say that the MW is checking you out, is she doing vaginal exams? If so, get her fingers out of there as it is a major risk factor.

More conservative protocols say to wait 24 hr before doing anything about contractions not starting after rupture of membranes.

It sounds like things are starting up, and just because it's slow now doesn't mean it won't speed up later.

I believe the stats are that 80% will go into labor within 24 hours.

my water broke on may 10, and did not have baby until may 16

drank lots of water, checked to make sure i did not have a temp, took vitamin c......

erratic contractions all week until may 16, then an easy, comfortable homebirth with healthy baby and me....

all can go well even when water breaks and no labor at first....

good luck!

I would say your MW is taking the right path for sure, as long as she is keeping fingers out of there (as PP said). Nothing should go into the vagina after water breaks. My MW has had several instances where someone's water has broken several days or even weeks before labor. One of her clients actually had broken water 7 weeks before labor and she delivered perfectly fine at 41 weeks without any issue or complications. Staying hydrated and keeping bacteria out are key. I know it's awkward, but take a breath and faith in you and your little one.

Thank you! This is just what I needed!

All of you, thank you

When I say my m/w "checked me" i mean my BP and baby's HB. She did one internal, with my permission, this afternoon after my vomiting/diarrhea episode, but reassured that that would be it until I was ready to push (if then at all).

It's so hard right now to be patient and trust in the process. But I'm trying!!

I feel as though I'm starting to lose my mind. I had an hour or so worth of productive ctx last night from 10:30 - 11:30 and then nothing. I managed to sleep for about 4 hours, with several wakings to pee. At one point, there was the smallest little bit of bloody show, but at this point I'm clinging to anything. I'll call my m/w in a few hours (the sun isn't even up yet), but right now I am feeling immensely discouraged by the prospect of another day of nothing.

It sounds like it might not be long now. Just take this time to rest and maybe read a good book.

Totally agree with PP. Is there something restful you can do to kind of distract yourself? Read a good book, watch a movie, do something creative, go grocery shopping, have lunch with a friend, etc. Maybe you're getting to the point where you're on edge waiting and watching for something to happen and your body is responding to this nervous energy and freezing up. I know it's hard not to watch and wait for something to happen, but maybe finding something relaxing that will take your mind away from it for awhile will help. You know, the old-fashioned "a watch pot never boils" thing. Lol...

My water broke on a Thursday around 4:00pm. My baby was born at 7:17 on Saturday morning after an easy four hour labor.

I drank lots of water. Made sure I was getting lots of vit C. and took my temperature every so often. My midwives came and listened to the baby and had me swab my fluid to make sure my water had really broke (it had). Also we did no vaginal exams. We just waited for labor. Everything went great.

Thanks all for checking in. A quick update: My little girl was born yesterday at 11:15 AM, weighing a petite 6 lbs 13 ounces -- a full pound smaller than her two older brothers.

I did have to transfer in the end, unfortunately. Tuesday night, when it had been about 44 hours, my m/w and I decided that I'd go in in the morning for some abx and pit, assuming labor didn't start overnight. I felt very supported by her and she did give me the freedom to wait a little longer, but both she and I ultimately felt that we had reached the end of my personal limit.

I went to sleep very, very sad. Then an hour later, I woke up incredibly nauseated and started vomiting. My pulse was elevated and my fever, while not as high as 99.6, was still higher than it had been. At that point, we decided to go in immediately. I arrived at about 2 a.m. and had antibiotics and slept for a few hours. Pitocin was started around 8 and I have a blissfully short labor -- just over 3 hours, with less than 5 minutes of pushing. I didn't have an epidural and was pleased that I was able to use hypnobirthing even in such less-than-ideal circumstances (I had used it with #2 as well, but that had been a picture perfect birth.)

I still have processing to do, but I am coming to terms with the fact that for whatever reason, this was *this* baby's path. I hope one day to have the home water birth that I had planned for (and that my whole family, including our sons, had so been looking forward to!) But for now, I have my beautiful daughter, who is truly worth any change in plans... plus the satisfaction (if you can call it that) that I managed to experience a positive outcome, more or less on my terms, at a hospital, despite all the odds.

Thanks again for all the encouragement! I know, without a doubt, that your experiences and advice helped to buffer me through those 54+ hours!

I'm sorry things didn't go as planned. It sounds like you have a great attitude and a wonderful midwife that helped you make the best decision for your family. Congratulations on a beautiful baby and a positive birth experience. Enjoy the babymoon!

Congrats Mama...glad you are holding your beautiful little girl. She took the birth journey she needed to take and you did a fantastic job in supporting your own needs and hers by allowing it to unfold as it did. Sounds like you had some great support too. Enjoy your little one and the time with the whole family!
