Lyle is sick -- what do I do?

Lyle seemed a little quieter to me than normal this weekend, but it's hard to tell. He's finally relaxing more and I attributed it to that. Plus I think during the week he sleeps all day when we're at work, whereas we were out and about a lot this weekend so I just thought we wore him out. Among other places we went we saw the vet at Petsmart (because, I am embarrassed to admit I had a coupon -- great way to choose a vet huh?) to get heartworm and flea medicine (which he hasn't taken yet), to 2 different playgrounds where we walked the perimeter, smelled stuff etc . . . , and to a national park where we got caught in the rain.

He seemed fine this morning -- it was pouring rain so we just went out briefly, and then played a long game of fetch and tug of war. His dog walker then came and took him out midday and he had 2 episodes of diarrhea. I then came home early and took him out for a long walk (almost an hour). (I didn't know about the diarrhea with the dog walker yet). He had his usual energy (which isn't a lot -- he's a pretty laid back guy) but he was running ahead on the retractible lead, then coming back to me, sniffing at things, making friends with passerby's. He also had 1 more episode of diarrhea, but it wasn't much. Then we came home and he threw up all over the rug. It was a lot -- a mixture of yellowish stuff, stuffed animal fluff (he disembowled one yesterday), and a little undigested kibble.

I called the vet who saw him in foster when the stitches at his neutering site got infected. I wasn't impressed with the Petsmart vet, and I figured I should talk to someone who had met him. When I talked to them I only knew about the one episode of diarrhea and one of vomiting, because I hadn't yet spoken to the dog walker. She said to fast him until breakfast, and then if he still has trouble in the morning to call her back and bring him in. She said it might be the change in food (we shifted over the course of a week and a half from Mighty Dog with unknown kibble and rice to EVO and canned Canidae, or just too much stuffed animal fluff.

He's outside with me now. He seemed worried after he threw up, like he thought I'd be mad and he wanted to go outside, so we're on the porch where it's cool. He's alternating between lying sleepily at my feet and getting up to investigate if he hears a noise. This is how he's been all weekend -- before that he did a lot more pacing around, but I think that's him settling in.

Should I be worried? Should I call the vet back and tell her about the other episodes of diarrhea? Anything else I should do?

Also this morning was the first time ever he's gone into the grass in the yard -- we had a big rain last night and the long grass is kind of flattened. Could he have gotten into something there?

Thanks!

As long as he's not in obvious pain I would tend to fast him for 24 hours and make sure he is drinking water to prevent dehydration - I have found this to be the fastest cure for mild tummy upsets. If he starts vomitting blood or passes more than a few drops of blood in diarrhea, I would take him to the vet (you may see a few drops just due to irritation in the intestines).

Any chance he ate plastic bits of that stuffie that may be causing problems in his belly?

BTW, I have to say I haven't heard much good about the Petsmart vets. They tend to over-vaccinate and -medicate to make money for the franchise.

I know we aren't "sticking" with the Petsmart vet, but since he'd already been seen within the past little while and all I really wanted was the Advantix and heartworm stuff we went with the free visit coupon. Of course, now I am regretting it since we don't have an established relationship with a vet. If I do take him in I think I'll take him back to the one who saw him in foster, and then pick someone closer longterm.

The stuffie was a "dog" stuffie -- that is, made for dogs. should I assume they wouldn't have dangerous bits in them?

Is it 24 hours since the last episode or 24 hours between meals (e.g. skip one meal since I feed him twice a day).

Also at Petsmart he weighed 4 lbs less than he weighed when he was neutered, so the vet told me to try and fatten him up. I upped his kibble, and gave him extra canned food stuffed in a bone -- could I have overfed him and upset his tummy? Any other suggestions on how to fatten up a dog?

Yes, the extra food could well have been a contributor. Many dogs have that reaction to getting fed more actually, it just goes right through if they can't digest it.

I wouldn't stress too much about fattening him up - dogs are healthier when thinner (unless they are really really skinny). Maybe just give him a little bit more of the dry food. Also this may have combined with the food change - and the new food may be richer anyway so you may not need to feed more.

For the fast, I would skip both daily meals - i.e. my dogs eat once a day so I would not feed them one meal. So I guess a better way of putting it is to skip 24 hours' worth of food.

I hope Lyle feels better soon!

I think the vet was concerned that he had lost 4 lbs (seems a lot in a 25 lb dog), not so much that his weight was actually low, he doesn't seem particularly skinny to me.

I guess I'll go back to feeding him the amount I was before.

how's lyle doing today?

also, you could start him off on cottage cheese and rice, that's nice and gentle on their tummies.

He's better today -- no throwing up, stools much harder. He never stopped having his energy.

I just gave him kibble today, after 24 hours of fasting. I can't imagine that he'd eat cottage cheese, rice etc . . . This is, after all, the dog that won't touch food that falls on floor, won't eat any brand of food but 2, etc . . . won't put a kong in his mouth, etc . . .

Anyway he's doing great so we cancelled the vet appointment.

Thanks for all the advice.

I'm glad he's feeling better! I think sticking to his food is a good idea, wouldn't want to throw too many new things into the mix, might be hard to figure out what's causing the problem.

i'm so glad he's feeling better!!

it's so funny, all of our dogs have always devoured everything, i guess i never really think of dogs being picky!

as for teh cottage cheese and rice.... he probably wouldn't eat it since he seems very particular, it's just kind of the cure-all remedy for when our dogs get diarrhea, it just settles their tummies down, nice good poops and all that, it's nice and bland and easy on their tummies.
