This is aimed at the K-3 crowd, but i love the books and the animated show on Qubo.

Jane and the Dragon http://www.amazon.com/Jane-Dragon-Ma...3385125&sr=1-2 There are a few in the series

Jane is a young girl who is supposed to be a lady in waiting, but longs to be a knight and practices in secret until a dragon kidnaps the young prince, she rides off and saves him and beriends the dragon. The animated series is wonderful and the books make me cry. Very strong female role.

I liked The Silver Crown, too.

Some others:
Pippi Longstocking - Astrid Lindgren
Ronia the Robber's Daughter - Astrid Lindgren
The Secret Garden - Frances Hodgson Burnett
A Little Princess - Frances Hodgson Burnett
Coraline - Neil Gaiman
The Princess and the Goblin - George MacDonald

Oh, and some of the Moomin books by Tove Jansson feature one of my favorite female characters, Little My. (The later ones, starting I think with Moominsummer Madness.)

We just recently received Maid of the North

We haven't read through it entirely yet, but I like it so far. Many of the stories end with the heroine's marriage to such and such hero but overall, I like it as a read-aloud because the tales are "great books" quality (one is from The Kalevala, off the top of my head).

We really enjoyed Nim's Island by Wendy Orr.

Brave Margaret. It's a picture book, but it's one of the more wordy picture books- 4 year olds would probably get bored of it, so I think it would fit the 6, 7, 8 range.

I love feisty Laura from the Little House series.

Wow, there are so many. In addition to the many wonderful books people have already mentioned:

The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, Joan Aiken (start of a series, many of them are wonderful, later books are a bit weaker)
Mistress Masham's Repose, T.H. White
the Ramona books, Beverly Cleary
The Clarice Bean books, Lauren Child
Harriet the Spy, Louise Fitzhugh
The Egypt Game, The Velvet Room, and others, Zilpha Keatly Snyder
The Moor Child, Eloise Jarvis McGraw
Caddie Woodlawn, Carol Ryrie Brink
Calico Captive, Elizabeth George Speare
The Worst Witch series (the Worst Witch is a bit of a screw-up, but the books are fun)
Nancy Drew!
The Boyhood of Grace Jones, Jane Langton (OOP, may be hard to find, but I LOVED this book as a kid!)
A Proud Taste for Scarlet and Miniver, E.L. Konigsburg
Daughter of the Mountains, Louise Rankin
Julie of the Wolves, Jean Craighead George

Believe it or not, the American Girls book series are quite well-written and do not try to sell you the dolls. My daughter has especially enjoyed the Felicity (Colonial) and Samantha (Victorian) books. there are tie-in mystery series for slightly older readers, with longer books and more advanced vocabulary, featuring the girls, and she loves those.
