books with strong female main characters... for 6,7,8,9 yo olds - Page 2

I recommend the Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull, about a girl and her younger brother who find out their grandparents run a sanctuary/preserve for mythological creatures. Great books, and the girl is a major, strong character in the story.

Also, in a totally different vein, I second the "Anne of Green Gables" suggestion, although personally I much preferred Emily of New Moon growing up (and still do).

And I also second the Tamora Pierce suggestion. "Alanna: The First Adventure" and the other Song of the Lioness books are faves, with a great strong female character.

All of these, though would be more appropriate for the upper end of your age range, I would say 9 years old is a good starting point.

Another Tamora Pierce suggestion. The earlier circle books are good for 8 or 9, the rest of her books are for slightly other people. They are fun even for adults to read and they all have strong female main characters.

The Land of Elyon series by Patrick Carman and Sisters Grimm series by Michael Buckley. Both series are really great reads and have strong female main characters.

Did you actually read these? Little sister comes from a divorced home... is a brat... makes terrible trouble and her family bails her out EACH and EVERY time. Not a good role model for girls. No way.

Try Tatterhood, Maid of the North and Girls to the Rescue.

Also Alana, by Tamora Peirce

Really? That's not how I remember them? In fact I disinctly remember Karen being able to over come her own problems.

And what does coming from a divorced home have anything to do with the book?

I really like Meg Cabot's new series: Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls. Allie is 9 and not trying to be 13, which is refreshing, and she has an excellent imagination.
