going camping... need sposies

We are going to be camping for a week this summer. I don't have enough cloth to get me through and have no access to laundry. I am planning to use sposies but have no idea what to get. DD hasn't used anything but cloth. Are the greener sposies really greener? Any recommendations? Tushies, 7th gen... what do you like?
TIA

Tushies are paper with no absorbers... I believe. I have used 7th Generation, they're chlorine free, but have a gel agent inside to absorb.

When I am places where I can't launder I sometimes use disposable diapers and then switch to cloth at the end of the trip. For example on an upcoming Monday to Saturday camping trip I will use disposable dipes and then switch to cloth on Wednesday night, since I can put everything in the laundry on Saturday.

Have a lot of fun!

I have never used the "green" disposibles, so I can't really compare that much for you. But as far as leak prevention and fit for us, pampers has always worked best when the baby is younger (with runnier poo). The cheaper ones (Walmart brand) are ok once the kid is older, but I can't go all night with them. We send my ds to one of our babysitters with sposies and he's fine with them, as long as she changes every couple hours.

But even the pampers would leave us with poop up the back when my ds was small....I love my cloth for that!

Enjoy your camping! I love going. :

Could you just hand wash the diapers? Line drying in the sun would kill any germs in the diapers. I've been toying with doing this next time we go camping. We used to only CD part time, but I decided I wasn't going to buy any more disposables, and haven't bought any since they ran out. I went through a period where I had to hand wash all of our clothes and they were just as clean as machine washing.

Too bad you don't have flats. Flat cloth diapers are what people used before everyone started going into prefolds. Flats are thin (traditionally 27 inches square), but folded up and tied/pinned/used with covers.

You can easily make them yourself. Plus, you can rinse them clean in any water source (like a stream) and sun/line dry them in no time.

That's my suggestion for camping. Are you going camping where you can throw things out, or are you packing everything and humping it all back out (like deep woods camping)?

I hated Tushies. Hated. Them. They gave my daughter a rash and she NEVER got rashes. They don't have gel. I like 7th Generation diapers. They are only moderately greener than, say, the "free" or hypoallergenic versions of Huggies. What about buying G diapers refills and putting them in your regular covers?

Otherwise, if it's a one-time thing, just that week, I'd get whatever's on sale.

Well, doesn't that depend on where you are? I mean you are supposed to bury excrement and if there are people using that water downstream... I think this option seriously depends on where one is camping.

Thanks for the replies. We are car camping but I live in AK and we will be camping in Montana. I really don't want to hand wash diapers. We only have an outhouse at the campground and I'm not OK with washing human feces in streams. It pollutes them.

I'm definitely going to use sposies of one kind or another while on the trip but I like the idea of going back to the cloth towards the end of it. Now I just need to figure out which sposies to get. Still looking for ideas in that department. EdnaMarie, just saw your post... glad to know about the Tushies. Gdiapers are something to consider... hmm
Thanks.

What a great suggestion. I may do it in two weeks time! I will be at a family camp, so can hand wash in the sink, but was dreading the drying time!

OP - I've used Seventh Generation on my sensitive skinned LO and he's been fine.

PP: here's a link on how to wash by hand:

I think it's important to use a bucket and stay away from the stream - (is it 200 feet?????)

you can use a liner that way you will be removing the poop off the diaper. flat diapers or even receving blankets work amazing. if it is really bad for you to wash the poop diapers then just wash and hang the peed ones and keep the poop ones till you get home. its really not that hard to do if you wanted to for me there is no option of sposies both of mine broke out in rashes so it was cding always:

Hi there,

I used to use disposables when out and about and at night when we were doing diaper service. We used the tushies at night when we knew she would only pee. They worked fine for nighttime but they couldn't handle a poop explosion for anything! The leg gussets were way too loose. So I switched to 7th generation for out and about and they handled poop pretty well but not as well as cloth. They are also very trim. My only complaint w/7th generation is that they run small. So size small says it goes up to 14 lbs but at 12 lbs DD is about too big for them already.

Have fun on your trip!

If your DD hasn't used sposies, I would be tempted to try one of whatever kind you choose before you trip starts just in case she reacts to it. It would suck to be stuck at camp with a bunch of dipes that give her a rash for the whole time and no other options.

We've used 7th generation and Earth's Best. We prefer 7th Generation because the Earth's best has these little beads inside. Have fun on your camping trip.

Thanks again...

So do other disposables run small like the 7th gen? (pampers, huggies, etc) or can I go by weight when buying them?

I can't remember all the reasons why but when I did a bunch of research into best (environmental) disposables, Moltex Oko were by far the winner. I think they are German. Until recently, I could only find them in specialty health food stores but now all of a sudden they are in most mainstream grocery stores and pharmacies in my neck of the woods. They work well enough. We have poosplosions with them but then again we do with all disposables.

I second the suggestion of G-Diaper inserts in a regular cover. This works great! Much better even than the G-Diaper covers which leak and don't wear well IMO. Get the med-large size to be sure of good coverage. They hold a LOT of liquid and are very trim and easy to use, they'll mold to the shape of your cover. You'll probably get some poo on your cover but just wipe it off. I have never had much luck flushing the inserts and wouldn't try that if you're at a campground with sensitive plumbing but you can just roll them up and throw them out (or compost the pee ones if there are facilities to do so).
