quilt critique and need suggestions

The quilt guild I belong to has a challenge, Tell Me a Story, the quilt needs to include orange, be 100 inches around and the story needs to be 100 words or less, can be real story, a made up one in your own head or follow along a nursery rhyme or a whole trilogy of books....

I haven't gotten my story written yet, will be something about My Garden, (I could talk all day about it) maybe along the lines of how I enjoy square foot gardening ... the planning, spacing, symmetry that goes along with the way I garden and how I also enjoy the same things in my quilting, all the little squares put together making a whole....

Here's my question for you folks, what color would you use for binding? I won't throw out there what I'm thinking because I don't want to put any thoughts in your heads....

Also I won't tell you quite yet my thoughts on the design or what I'm thinking about the quilt because I want you to tell me.... be truthfully honest please! I won't take any offense, PM me if you really want to be blunt! The quilt isn't for an award or a juried show, just to show to the other folks in the guild - those folks have all levels of experience in quilting so I want to be kinda prepared for how others may react

The quilt isn't finished yet, I've almost (yeah right!!) have the inside part quilted, the outer 2 borders I have not even started on what type of quilting design to use, let alone put in a single stitch there, so suggestions on what type of design in the outer borders would also be helpful, in the inner part, the quilting follows the grid work of the fabric design itself. I am hand quilting this one.

Here's the picture of the quilt and here's a picture of my garden.

I love it!

Maybe in keeping with the theme you can use a pumpkin seed in the border?

As for the binding, maybe a yellow.

I was actually thinking an orange for the binding, but your yellow idea really sounded good!

I found this fabric at the Hancock store today so bought it, It's a bright yellow, with an orange flower and some green leaf to it, a darker green and a light green that goes well with what I already have. I think it will tie things together nice.

I love that fabric!

After you put the binding on, you can always do some random blanket stitching along the binding in a contrasting thread (embroidery floss, perle cotton, etc) and then add on beading as you're doing the blanket stitch. Do you know what i mean? It'll add some surprise to the binding and some texture.

I'm seeing a very deep dusky purple for the border.

For quilting since this quilt is highly geometric (fabric) and style I would stick with something plain or straight lined.

Maybe an Irish chain design in the inner border, and piano key or zigzag the outer border?

Quilting for me is the hardest part. Oh how about leaves? They have templates at the craft store, you could get in the right size and quilt the orange border with leaves to go with the garden theme.

Oh and another binding color idea- burgundy?

Very interesting.........tell us when you decide.
