What size covers do I need?

I ordered some prefolds that say 8-15lbs..
Looks like most of the covers come in something like x-small: 6-12lbs, small: 12-18lbs. What size do I go with?

Looking at a sampler package with:
Bummis Super Whisper Wrap
Prorap Classic
Thirsties
Imse Vimse

I suggest getting some XSmalls and some Smalls. Newborns tend to fit the XS well but they grow pretty quickly They'll be in the smalls in no time.

Hope you have a great rest of the pregnancy!

My 7 week old is now about 12 lbs. We're using both XS and S size Thirsties on him right now. The XS Thirsties say they go up to 12 lbs, but I think they'll still fit him for a few more pounds, and we've been using the smalls on him since he was about 10 lb. The XS covers fit on him when he was pretty small...he was 6 lb 5 oz at birth.

If you plan to CD from day one you will need the xsmalls. They will fit from anywhere from just a week or two, to maybe 6-8 weeks.

The smalls will be too big at first. My babe was 8lb8oz and the smalls were too big for about 6 weeks. The explosive BF poop will escape them even if they look like they fit

That is an excellent sampler--nearly all babies will fit into at least one of those covers! If you're going to have a newborn I say start with newborn or xs covers, but get some smalls too in case they grow overnight. My newborn fit into the newborn Bummis Super Whisper Wrap well past the weight range, until she was several months old; those particular covers seemed to fit her better at the end of the weight range than they did at the beginning. Proraps ran smaller than BSWW.

Ok, so I am not planning on cding right at first, that's why I didn't buy the newborn prefolds. I am thinking after a few weeks, but I have no idea what size my baby will be. And after all these posts, I am getting a little more confused. Here are the package size options:

Package #1
6-10 lb/Newborn

Bummis: Newborn
Prorap Classic: Newborn
Thirsties: X-Small
Imse Vimse: Newborn

Package #2
11-14 lb

Bummis: Small
Prorap Classic: Small
Thirsties: Small
Imse Vimse: Small

Does that help on which package I should order?

It's borderline, depending on how long you plan to use sposies for. If it were me, I'd probably get package #2, and just wait until they fit! They do grow out of the xs pretty fast...

Well, my baby was 6 lb 5 oz at birth, and he was 10 lb by about the end of his 5th week (granted, that's a pretty fast growth rate, and not all babies gain that quickly). So, if you go with the 11-14 lb package listed here, you may be waiting more than a few weeks to start with the cloth diapers. Of course, you could have a 9-10 lb baby, then you really would be only waiting a few weeks until he/she fit the small covers. I know that planning is kind of a pain when you don't know how big the kid will be at birth. I would base the decision about which package to buy on whether or not you would be annoyed if you bough the XS stuff and were only able to use them for a couple of weeks (i.e., would you feel you'd wasted too much money).

With the covers - the length of time you can use them really seems to depend just as much on the shape of your baby (long and thin, short and thick, chubby thighs, etc.) as the weight, so there's no way of really knowing ahead of time.

Sorry, that's probably not the answer you were looking for.

That helps! Thanks! I think maybe I will go with the larger size package as I have been given a lot of sposies as gifts and would like to use those while I get the hang of being a mom. I don't want to be overwhelmed with everything being new and give up on cloth in the beginning.

Yeah, we used disposables for the first 10 days or so. I certainly didn't want to mess with cloth while he still had meconium poos, and I didn't want to deal with washing the cloth diapers during that first stretch where I was still trying to figure out what I was doing and he was still quite tiny to get a good fit with the prefolds anyway.

Good luck!
