I'm very familiar with the McKinlay article, which is an excellent analysis, very thorough.

I don't have time to read your second link, Marnica, but this quote from the summary stood out:

Causes of infant mortality are drastically different from those prevalent early in the century, which were closely connected with living conditions and the environment.

Note, they aren't saying mumps...
