Just switched to raw

I had everyone (a kelpie, a dachshund, and a cat) on dry kibble. It's easy, and cheap. But I realized my cat (have only had him a month) wasn't drinking much water. I know this can be a problem and such cats should be fed wet food only. I decided to feed him raw instead of canned, because raw is actually cheaper.

I was originally just gonna switch the cat. I'm lazy . When I did the math though, raw came out cheaper than kibble. I figure I can spend 40 for a bag of Canidae (I don't, I buy a higher end grocery store brand because it's easier to get than anything good - I live in hicksville), and it will last me 2 months. Throw in $10 a month for cheaper cat food, 15-20 for high end (my cat is part pig). I figured that I could feed all three raw meat for about $30.

So I went shopping. I was originally gonna buy the 10 lb bag of hindquarters from walmart, and then maybe a whole chicken or 2 to start. But it went up 20 cents a lb since last time I looked at it. It was $.63 per lb. And it's never fresh, and I don't have a meat grinder yet (it's in the mail). For $.69, I could get whole (fresh) chickens.

Then I decided to try other smaller stores, and came across a 10 lb bag of chicken wings for $.79/lb. Perfect! Not much more money than the nasty hingquarters, and manageable for my old dachshund and cat. I divided it up into what I thought they would each eat in a day, and got 12 meals out of it!

I gave them all some today. I gave the dogs each a wing, and chopped up part of one for the cat. The dogs have had raw before, it's nothing new to them. My dachshund smelled it and started dancing around, and ran off with it as soon as I gave it to her. My kelpie tried her classic "but aren't you gonna cut it up for me?" look that she gives me when I give her whole slices of bread. As soon as she heard the little dog crunching, she ate hers in record time. The cat was less than amused. He sniffed it then looked at me like I was nuts. I mixed it with his wet food (that already had ground turkey mixed in). He did eat a few good chunks of meat. Nothing with bone in it yet, but this is only day one. He'll be gnawing on bones in no time.

I'm glad that you're enjoying raw!

If I can butt in with some advice though, don't grind anything! And I would definitely suggest feeding the leg quarters or whole chickens (which you can divide up) instead of wings. Not only are the wings more expensive, but they are almost all bone so you're not getting much meat for your money. They need a lot of meat, not bone, plus feeding that much bone will likely make them constipated after a few days.

For the "hesitant to eat bone" dog, maybe try smashing whatever you give her, just so it softens the bone a bit while still being whole. She sounds very dainty.

You are really going to like raw - I can tell such a difference in my dachshund's coat - so soft and shiny. The poops are the best perk tho, IMO.

I don't do many chicken wings because like the PP said, they are mostly bone. My mini dachshund can handle some pretty big cuts of meat - he ate a big turkey leg, bone and all the other day - and I had no idea he could do that! A meaty thigh is a great size for him as well as pork necks - if the pork necks are super bony I will throw some gizzards in for more meat. Both of those things are very cheap.

But the cat? He can't eat hindquarters...

I'm not going to grind it all, just until the cat gets used to raw meat.

I didn't know you could feed pork necks?

My dachshund has some allergy issues, she gets itchy, she'll feel so much better! Kelpie isn't reluctant to eat bone, just big pieces of anything. Bread, tortillas, etc. She ate it, no problem. She got her first chicken leg when she was 3 months. Man, she was a happy pup.

If the kitty ate it chopped then you probably don't need to grind at all. I would try to get him used to eating it less and less chopped. He sure can eat chicken quarters, that is if he wants to. You can divide the drumstick from the thigh and give those separately too (the drumstick is not that much bigger than a wing anyway).

We feed pork neck bones too, nothing wrong with them though they are boney so I add boneless meat to that meal. The proteins we use on a regular basis are pork, chicken, beef, turkey, fish (different kinds), lamb (about in that order of amounts though it varies depending on what we find a good deal on).

Yeah, you can feed pretty much anything - pork necks, turkey necks, chicken and turkey backs - the thing to keep in mind is that if it's mostly bone you will want to give some meat to balance that out. I keep gizzards on hand for that.

I bet your dachshund's allergies will improve - my Mom recently switched her super allergic lab to raw and he is doing so much better!!
